Why would I want to watch SjU fail? I've being see that the last 20 years or so. Sick of it, aren't you?

Maybe it's time St Johns fans  realize what this program actually is

Why would I want to watch SjU fail? I've being see that the last 20 years or so. Sick of it, aren't you?

Maybe it's time St Johns fans  realize what this program actually is

What this program actually is:

- 1992. Lou retires. We hire the longtime assistant to replace him, and in 2 years we go from being a national contender that opponents feared to one that they looked forward to playing.

- 1996. Mahoney is fired, and replaced with Fran Fraschilla. He quietly took Manhattan and STJ to the NCAA tournament in the 90s. He also landed 2 McDonald's All Americans in consecutive classes. We fired him in 1998, the year after he pulled us out of the gutter. Why? 2 reasons are rumored to be why. 1, he pulled his pants down and asked his team if they knew what balls looked like? 2, he was sniffing around at Arizona State for a job. Whatever the reason, our recruiting has not reached the level Fran brought it to in terms of highly ranked talent like Artest and Barkley, and true sleepers like Bootsy and Gray.

- 1998. We hired Mike Jarvis. At first, things were pretty damn good. In his first 4 years, overall, Jarvis did a very good job as a coach. Was he the right choice over the long haul? F no. BUT, he was fired from a Catholic school on Christmas Eve, and then we asked Kevin Clarke to take over for him as our head coach. Jarvis deserved to get fired, BUT this is a school that in 1998 fired Fraschilla, and didn't bother to give anyone a good reason as to why. How would this sit with potential targets after the season?

- 2004. Instead of hiring a proven head coach, or even an assistant coach who was good at something, we hired Norm Roberts. A guy who couldn't recruit, coach, teach or even speak.

- 2010. We replaced Norm with a coach that can recruit. A coach that can speak. But so far, the jury is out regarding whether or not Lavin can coach.

More than anything, I want to believe that Lavin's plan will lead us somewhere. It is way to soon to give up on the season, but if what we are seeing now is a clear picture of what we'll have for the next several seasons, I think we can clearly define what this program REALlY is.

It's a school and a program that collectively has shown an unbelievable amount of bad judgement. THAT, is what we are. And THAT is what we'll be until Lavin, or his replacement or that guy's replacement is able to change what has become a culture of losing.

This topic has been spoken about over and over and over but the worst mistake this school ever made was firing Mike Jarvis during the season. The snowball effect crippled the program for years.

Please don't forget...    if Jarvis doesn't get fired that season - the Pitt incident never happens, they don't dismiss Abe Keita from the team and he never opens his mouth about getting money from the staff...   we never go on probation and are never forced to hire an unproven coach.....   its is simply amazing the ripple effects that the decision by Fr. Harrington to be the first Big East program to ever fire a coach in season had on the basketball program.

Hopefully the hiring of Whitsell pays dividends but if not, Coach Lavin needs to swallow his pride and ask Dunalp, if he is interested, to come to back to SJU.

To me a key point in program was when Jarvis and his aggressive agent overplayed their hand with NBA job and decided to hang another year. As a result, if memory is correct, we lost out on Jay Wright and headed downhill.

I agree that was a terrible choice, and a heartless one as well for a catholic school. Jarvis is pompous, obnoxious and stubborn, but he didn't take the team out to club erotica. Nor did he enlist the services of an frightingly unattractive middle aged woman.

The thing is, since Lou, you can point to every hire except one as a bad choice. Fran is a New Yorker. He was the only coach since Lou who consistently kept the local stars home. They wanted to play for him, BECAUSE he was volatile. BECAUSE he was aggressive, BECAUSE they were too.

Harrington hated that the school was known for basketball. I called him out for what he really was in 2004, and some people on the boards didn't care for my accusations. An I told you so doesn't make me feel any better, because like all of you, I sat there suffering through Norm Roberts, because Harrington had other things on his mind.

I'm not happy with how this season has played out so far, but it's January 3rd. Everyone needs to calm the F down. If Norm was here, we'd have lost to Monmouth, Longwood and Columbia. At least we've been in every game we've played. That isn't an answer to problems, but it's respectable, and with Norm, we were truly a laughing stock.

It seems whats being rehashed should make the board thrilled with coach Lav hire. Cal went to Memphis and Rick to Louisville. Now this was Conf USA. did they win right away? I really don't remember. Recent hires at Michigan, Arizona, and Indiana. Guys hired close to the best in college hoops. Did Crean or Beilein win right away? Did the guy at Arizona? That one I'm fuzzy on. Always been sorry we didn't hire Beilein. I think he's a gentlemen. He can coach any kind of player. He woulda won here with top150's. Anyway should Indiana have given up on Crean. What am I getting at, oh yea. Lavs first class just became juniors. With the hires SJU has made since they had chances to get a real coach, Lav comes up looking real good. He certainly doesn't deserve some of the stuff written here. Hewett would not come, and I think Seth called us cheap. Oh, and what he makes, who's business is that?

While every situation is different you bring up fair points.

Beilein did not see real success until his 4th year at Michigan.  (This is Lavin's 4th year.  Yes I count the year he did not coach and just recruited)  Beilen went 10-22, 21-14 (NCAA 2nd Rd), 15-17 and 21-14 (NCAA 3rd Rd).  5th year was 24-10 (NCAA 2nd Rd) and 6th year was runner up finish in NCAA's.

I refuse to use Crean as comparison because that situation is so far out there there is no comparison.  I've pointed that out in the past.

Sean Miller went 16-15 year 1 with no post-season.  Then 30-8 (Elite 8), 23-12 (NIT 1st Rd), 27-8 (Sweet 16).

It took Cal 6 years before really starting to inflict damage.

21-15 (NIT Semis)
27-9 (NIT Champs)
23-7 (NCAA 1st Rd)
22-8 (NCAA 2nd Rd)
22-16 (NIT Semis)

Then
33-4 (Elite 8)
33-4 (Elite 8)
38-2 (Runner Up) *its entire 38–2 2007–08 season vacated by the NCAA due to academic fraud not directly related to the university.
33-4 (Sweet 16)

Pitino's years at Lville in CUSA
19-13 (NIT 2nd Rd)
25-7 (NCAA 2nd Rd)
20-10 (NCAA 1st Rd)
33-5 (Final Four)

Finally for reference Lavin's record
21-12 (NCAA 2nd Rd) *Take some of the 2nd rounds with grain of salt as they are really 1st round losses.  Not sure when switch was made.
13-19
17-16 (NIT 2nd Rd)
Remember who broke the Slice news

I'd say Jordan is gone minutes after the last games buzzer, if that long.   For the rest of the season, he'll try to get his.
