« on: December 22, 2013, 09:40:14 PM »
Here's how I see it:

1. STJ
2. Manhattan
3. Stony Brook
4. St.Francis
5. Princeton
6. Iona
7. Seton Hall
8. RU
9. FDU
10. Fordham
11. Rider

Where's Columbia? They took Manhattan to the wire and were 2 minutes shy of upsetting Michigan State on the road. With wins over Bucknell, FDU and North Texas, I would put them in the middle of the pack.

FDU and St. Peter's both beat Hall already this year.

Fordham is currently 6-4, moving up a couple of seeds in the A-10, along with making the NIT should be attainable in year 4 of the Pecora era.

Iona is 5-5 but I still expect them to contend with Manhattan for the #1 seed in the MAAC.

All good points. Just wanted to start the discussion. I'd like to see a NY team like Fordham make the NIT, but they have so far to go. I think right now, we are a 1 or a 2 seed in the NIT.

Fordham will likely finish the season 12-18 or 13-17 and come nowhere near the NIT.

They could make the CBI. The CBI for that school would be a tremendous accomplishment.

Should be attainable in year 4, not will be. Pecora is along the same timeline as Lavs.

The early candidates for Haggerty imo:

I agree. Those are the top 3 candidates w Harrison in the lead. Edwin might get a sniff, but we don't know how healthy he'll be this year. Warney on Stony Brook is pretty good, and the kid on LIU is holding his own. Severe is probably a strong ROY in the NY area and in the A10.

According to the latest Newsday poll they have Manhattan as the #1 area team.  I think we'd take them to the woodshed.

I know Seton Hall had a few bad losses but, when everyone is healthy, I think they are higher on that list. I think Iona is way lower. I don't see much difference between them and Fordham.

I think you're right, but I think they'll still struggle in the BE because of a lack of athletes. I don't think they can play d even when healthy. Edwin and Gibb are their two best players. When they are at full strength, they might move up to #2.

I agree.  If you are a college basketball writer in NY you can not possibly think Manhattan would beat St John's more often than not.  Manhattan is good but St'John's would beat them 6 out of 10 times minimum (thus St. John's is a better team).

With better wins this year too.

The Post does this every Friday.  Here is how they saw it most recently (so, before the Youngstown St. game, obviously):

St.John's and Manhattan are probably very close in terms of quality wins, because neither program really has any. The closest we come to a quality win in Georgia Tech and maybe Bucknell, but probably not anymore.

Manhattan has beaten LaSalle, which is certainly a quality win for their program. They also beat South Carolina, a team that we destroyed last year at Alumni Hall. Their loss to Fordham is straight up pathetic.

Thing is, we have 3 losses, and they have two. We lost to 2 top 10 teams. In 1 of those losses we came to play. In the other, we didn't. Our 3rd loss is a bad one IMO as it stands now. Penn State looks like every bit the Big Ten bottom feeder we expected them to be. We weren't ready for that game. Still, one thing that stands out to me and I'm sure it does as well for every single STJ fan, is that we haven't been embarrassed this season by a low level D1 school. (Yet)

That said, should we take care of business on Sat, we'll be 9-3 heading into conference play, and I think that puts us on the bubble along w Manhattan. There is no other local that has any chance of even an at large NIT bid. It's the weakest field since I can remember.

Once again, it's up to us to carry the city, and it is so rare that we rise to the occasion. With the Knicks and Nets playing awful bball, this could be a great chance for us. We'll see.

I guess losing at home to Fordham wrapped up the top spot.

We'd beat Manhattan by 20 in a meaningful game.

This year it seems a little like the old days. St John's than every one else.
