"This sums up Lavin.  Lavin caught being stupid just keeps talking and hopefully you won't notice.  But eventually most do."

Wow.  Pretty scary how things are playing out exactly as these writers predict

1. Even after all these years and hating/blaming Steve Lavin, they still have not won a national champion. They did fire the coach that got them their consecutive times...

2. UCLA keeps saying how special they are and only the very best deserve to coach there...But last time  I checked coaches were not exactly fighting each other to coach there. Wasn't the issue that their is all pain and no glory because of unrealistic expectations the fans expect.

3. Please tell me if I am wrong (honestly asking) but wasn't half of Wooden's championship teams illegally paid? Not saying that Wooden was ever involved in the payments (if true) but why is this never held against him. I am not saying he was not a great man and great coach, but he is a basketball god that cannot be touched and all of his sins are ignored.

4. As per Lavin's tenure here so far, his teams have gotten better and there is buzz about SJU BB again.

I am not saying the UCLA writers are wrong but they never liked the man and even after UCLA fired him, the school still has not won a national championship. Maybe it wasn't just Lavin's fault.

As of right now I am extremely disappointed with how the team started the BE season, but it is still very early in the season. Who knows what the hell is going on now and hopeful for the sake if the program he can deliver on his promises.

UCLA before Sam Gilbert there was the scandal of the early 1950s resulting in the end of the old PCC and formation of  new conference. Almost all member were paying football and basketball players including UCLA.

The I told you crap from UCLA fans is a joke.  They are entitled brats, terrible fans.  Wahhhh one elite 8 and several sweet 16s, terrible coach.

That being said, Lavin can't coach at all and with lesser talent at St. John's (he doesn't have the UCLA name brand/facilities to bring in final four talent), it's even more glaring.

What's the most unfortunate about all this is that Lavin was the best candidate for the job as everyone decent told St. John's to get lost. Even Seth Greenberg who got fired in 2012 and still has no job.

Someone needs to get mike dunlap on the phone.  With dunlap coach was overcoming his number one and two flaws (coaching and discipline).

That would be a full circle if Dunlap comes back to be the next head coach...
What is puzzling I that Lavin has tried to upgrade his coaching, unless Keady is just there for show.

I think a big reason why coaches wanted no part of us was probably Harrington. That dirtbag fired Fraschilla for no reason, and followed that up with firing Jarvis on Christmas Eve. Why would a coach with options play for a school with a man like that as your boss?

He also put waaaayyyyyyy too much focus on the Soccer team. Ignoring the bread and butter of the school has set the team back from which we have to recover from...plus the Redmen curse. :-)

I meant to be lead assistant.  They basically were splitting the head coaching roles which worked for both Dunlap and Lavin because they are both lacking in the departments the other excels at.

I could be wrong but I doubt Dunlap would want that. I would think he would be looking for a head coaching job

+1000.  Basketball insiders clearly knew Dunlap was the brains behind Lavin's first year success with Norm's team (hence the Bobcats HC job), and the fact that Dunlap squeezed 13 wins out of 5 freshman and GG was, in retrospect, nothing short of a miracle IMO.  That Lavin has since tried to be both the brains and the recruiting closer since Dunlap's depature is the main reason why this team's growth has been stunted.

$ talks and no better way to get a lucrative head coaching job after a mere 1 season as Bobcats coach than proving, once again, he is the reason for st johns' success on the court.

The Dunlap ship has sailed.   If he was going to return as an assistant it would've happened before the season.

Wooden was at UCLA for 15-16 years before he won his first national championship. Lets not forget that he was getting $$$$$ the best players' in basketball let alone college.

Good grief. We're going to slander John Wooden now to bolster Lavin's credibility?

Wooden was a three time all american as a HS basketball player, a three time all american as a college player, and played basketball professionally. He was 218–42 as a HS coach, 664–162 as a college coach,  and won 7 NC in a row, the one sports record that will stand until life in the universe is extinguished. He was married to his HS sweet heart for 53 years, served 3 years in the navy during WW2, and lived to be 100. His favorite book was the Bible. That's a pretty full life, well lived.

Its undoubtedly true that his players got paid by Sam Gilbert. That was during the same era that Louie's players were getting paid by the Lucchese Family. It was a different, simpler time.

Let's not get your panties in a bunch, i'm not slandering anyone, just simply pointing out that even the great John Wooden needed 15 yrs before he won his first National Championship. 125 of his 147 loses at UCLA happened in those first 15 years. His highest final ranking was 7th, and 9 times in those first 15 years UCLA did not even finish ranked. Its not like he had to rebuild UCLA, when he took over the program he already had consensus All American Duane Klueh on the team. His final twelve years he and Sam lost a total of 22 games and finishing no lower than 2nd in the final rankings only twice. No question Wooden was a great coach, but it was his final 12 years that made him, and it may be true that it was Sam that helped him and everybody else, realize his greatness. Not taking anything away from Wooden, it was what it was, but if it took him 15 years to win a National Championship at a program that didn't need any rebuilding, I would like to think that Lavin could get more than 4 years before people start calling for his head.

I'm not calling for Lavin's head, I'm just pointing out that he's a bad coach in danger of becoming a buffoon.  You're free to compare him to the greatest coach in any any sport that ever lived, but I think it's a silly. The argument that it took Wooden 15 years to win a national championship - he won ~ 100 games in his first 4 years at UCLA and lost 30 - could be made in favor of any coach, even one like Lavin who's about 50 wins and 60 losses with his own players since 2002. Perhaps he should temper our expectations further from the team might gel in February to the team might gel in 2024.
