This was Mahoney's most talented team.(Four future pros) He could never figure out which 5 fit best and team had disappointing season.

The problem with that team is that they weren't a team. Just a collection of all
stars meant to ooh and ahh at Lopez' presence. Lopez' getting his ass kicked all over the court in the BE was too much to overcome because the league had already figured how to stop him. It was really too easy.

After him, Hamilton was learning on the job. He was talented, but raw on defense, and unaware the rest of the time. But he was talented enough to get his own shot. Minlend did a lot of the dirty work. As did Rowan Barrett, but the older guys for the most part like James Scott and Derek Brown, resented the freshman, and a division formed immediately.

The season might have turned out differently if the freshman came off the bench, and earned their playing time by contributing off the bench. But patience was thin after such a poor second year under Mahoney. So, Mahoney began with Lopez and Hamilton in the starting line up. Mo Brown couldn't run the point. Turner wasn't ready either. That left Lee Green and Derek Brown.

It bombed miserably. The entire season was wasted.

We Are

Was thinking the same thing the other night, I recall something about Lopez's brother Anderson as a cause of problems in the locker room. And oh could they have used a point guard

Yea, my bad brown was a medical redshirt that year. He played, (very poorly) the next season, where we won 11 games, and lost the Lapchick tourney at Alumni Hall.

Ty Grant was a frosh on the next season team and Derek Brown returned but James Scott left. Similar team struggled worse than year before. People might disagree but Lavin does remind a little me of Mahoney. At least as SJU coach. Obviously Lavin had a lot more success at UCLA. Look Larry Brown was a successful coach but he was the worst Knick coach of my lifetime. I am only judging Lavin by what he has done here, and he does remind me of Mahoney.

My source, I always wanted to post that and yes I have one told me James Scott and Felipe hated each other and had a fight in practice.

Yep, that's true. Lopez was a self centered player, but so was Scott. Ball hogs the both of them.

Ball hog or not, Lopez should not have taken that last shot from the top of key vs. Detroit. Artest should have gotten the ball. What was Fran thinking?
