One of the newspaper articles I read (I was at the game) said fans or students started an overrated chant near very end of game. Not a good idea on two fronts: 1) why diminish our accomplishment, 2) why antagonize a team we may have to play again in BET.  ::)

- Phil Greene knocked down an open 3. This is a great trend if he can continue to do this at least once a game on minimal attempts.
- Rysheed Jordan is really figuring things out and his ability to penetrate is allowing him to create.
- JaKarr's midrange jumper might be the most consistent element of this team.
- A lot of times you saw guys playing with some confidence and swag. Good plays, hustle is contagious and right now this team is infectious!
- Harrison can make a living at the FT line. Love when he gets there 6+ times.
- Obekpa is adding more dimension and earning his minutes. He's really fighting on offense to get position, playing with confidence, and his teammates are showing faith in him. Might have been his best game and he didn't record a block!
- Outside of Pointer and Obekpa the team had a total of 1 turnover.
- The team didn't tighten up at the end. When there was a minute to go, I feared they'd bleed 35 seconds off the clock and not get a good shot when up 2. They actually got a good look even though it didn't fall. I like that the team was poised and was looking to score.
- Doug McDermott and Grant Gibbs are really fun to watch. Glad they didn't have any last minute heroics.

Dave I totally agree with all your other assessments.

Just two more things to add:

Sanchez should be nailed to the bench next to Marco
3+5=W

Sanchez is such a stiff out there. His missed layup was also huge.

Greene is a solid little player who is finding his niche with this team as the last 2 years he had a much bigger role and kinda knew what to expect

Paultzman, I didn't mean to call you out I was just using you as an example of how this fan bases basketball iq's are about as low as some of our players (Dom, Branch, Orlando)

What exactly are your credentials?

Sanchez has been taking a lot of heat lately and he has been underperforming but he still is a serviceable player for us as he adds length and bulk inside and he does know how to body up and keep people out of the paint or dissuade a player from taking a shot. Don't forget he sat out last year and most jucos take a year to adjust and are much more productive their second season. I realize unfortunately that sanchez doesn't have that luxury. Never see him pout and as far as I know doesn't complain about PT. Likeable kid who hung in there with us so I am happy to cut him some slack.

Do you think is Lavin did not hype him as much as he did, that Sanchez would be receiving as much heat?
Would there be more of positive reaction if he was just on the team without all of last years baggage?

He and Phil are very serviceable players if used correctly but can be brutal if asked to do things that don't fit their style. Sanchez looks like he is short on confidence at the moment as he passed up a couple wide open mid range jumpers yesterday. I would like to see him catch the ball at the elbow area for a jumper or head fake and blow by to get him going a little bit

Probably yes to both points. I just think his mental make up is not to be aggressive enough and when you are not a feature offensive player and you have too pick your spots to make offensive moves it can be very tough especially if you are not successful. If a guy goes 0-2 or 1-4 it seems like he had a terrible game but if someone goes 6-19 some people think a player had a good game because they remember numerous baskets. Moose had it right when he said Orlando only averaged 10 a game in juco cause the guards took most of the shots. If he wasn't aggressive offensively as a juco how can we expect him to be aggressive as a one year newcomer on a team with established scores like Dlo and Karr and also Phil, Dom, Jamal, Sheed and when he played Max (who actually is in same boat as Orlando) are trying to get off some shots to. There is only one basketball. If Orlando came to a team where the coach said I need you to be a primary scorer and he could put up 12-14 shots a game I think he would find his rhythm and be quite effective. That's just my opinion anyway as he has shown some flashes of what he is capable of.

"Where was everybody?: Shame on St. John’s fans. Shame on local college basketball fans. You had the possible National Player of the Year, Creighton’s Doug McDermott, making his Madison Square Garden debut and red-hot "St. John’s playing its best basketball of the season, and only 6,739 people decided to show up.
Those who did get to the Garden were loud, energetic and into the thrilling nail-bitter. Still, when did we get so soft around here? The game tipped off at 7 p.m., and the weather is no excuse. It barely snowed.
Here’s hoping next Sunday’s showdown with Georgetown at the Garden, again set to start at 7 p.m., draws a far better crowd. St. John’s deserves it, the way it is playing these days."

Kinda see both sides. On one hand STJ fans are famous for their fair-weather support. It has defined them over 20 years, but then again, wins put people in the seats. For an NIT team are people going to come into the city on a Sunday night? Clearly not. Maybe if we beat Seton Hall on the road, we'll have a chance to sell some tickets for Georgetown on the 16th.

Sunday at 7 isn't the easiest game to make.

Dave,

No excuse.  Never mind the fair weather Johnny fans, but where are NYC hoops fans?  A top rated player on a highly ranked team comes into MSG to play a hot local team and no one shows up.  It is an embarrassment and another sign that NYC hoops fans don't measure up to their underserved reputation.  These two teams would have drawn a better crowd on a neutral court in middle of nowhere.

Haven't seen it mentioned but I think we've been a much tougher, physical and scrappy team then we were a few weeks ago. Setting the tone

Well I disagree. Since every game is on TV it is much easier and financially affordable to watch the game at home. Also anyone who lives outside of the city getting home via train late Sunday night is difficult.

I was in Texas this weekend so obviously I missed the game but if I would have been at the game I wouldn't have gotten home until a little after midnight. Not something most people are willing to do especially when they have to wake up early for work Monday morning.

Thought Dom Pointer and Branch were great sparks off the bench. GG in limited action too. All added positive minutes as soon as they came on the floor.

Dave my man I disagree with you about Branch he was responsible for a 6-8 point swing at the end of the half and it could have been worse because he totally fouled the guy from 3 but got away with it.  Brutal defender

I think Branch is fine defensively and he keeps the ball flowing offensively. Notice when he catches he's immediately putting pressure on defense by penetrating instead of holding onto the ball for 2 seconds before swinging it.

Midway through first half he entered the game with Dom and they brought good energy. The team came back with Jordan and Harrison on the bench and that is really really important.

I think Sanchez will have his moments. He's a matchup problem on some nights.

He is averaging more ppg, rpg, bpg, and higher %'s across the board than Amir Garrett in the same mpg. He's been an upgrade.

The average New Yorker thinks a Creighton is something to be purchased at Bed, Bath and Beyond.  Trying to win an Ncaa tournament game at a rate better than once every two decades couldn't hurt either.

I thought Sanchez did a good job on the boards, especially in the first half.

As far as the attendance, Dave is right in that 7:00 is not an ideal time for those who take mass transportation to the game from outside the city. With that said, I know a bunch of people who drove on Sunday to the game, and made it to/from the game much quicker than mass transit. And parking/traffic on Sun night are typically not that bad, and not nearly as bad as if you were heading in at that time on a different day of the week.

Monday is a holiday for many people, so having to work on shouldn't be a deterrent for attending the Gtown game.

There were a bunch of Syracuse fans sitting behind me. Told me they have attended a few St. John's games after watching how well we played against Cuse.
