Xavier Game 2
« on: February 24, 2014, 11:17:29 AM »
"The Musketeers have lost five of their last eight games. The rigorous Big East slate and glut of teams jockeying for positioning in the standings have made conditions tough, but Xavier also has collapsed at inopportune times.

Defense has been a recurring issue for a group that has allowed an average 77 points in its last five losses. Providence, Seton Hall, Villanova, Marquette and Georgetown averaged eight made 3-pointers in those games.

Xavier also lacked gumption on the glass against the Hoyas. It lost the rebounding battle 26-21.

A lot of 50-50 balls they came up with is something you can control. I think guys want to win but you’ve got to show the effort there,” Stainbrook said. “Especially when they’re making shots and you’re seeing the ball go through the hoop a lot, you’re not really expecting a lot of rebounds to come off. It hurts when the rebound does come off and you’re not the first guy there.”

Xavier had trouble jump-starting its half-court offense at Georgetown because of turnovers and spacing issues. Beyond double-figure finishers Semaj Christon, Justin Martin and Stainbrook, only four other Musketeers scored. None amassed with more than three points." Full article;

Games after blowout losses scare me.  Hopefully we catch them at a "we give up on the season" game and not on a "Damn coach is gonna cut me unless I score 50" game.

Really no way to discuss the game until that is answered.Tough spot. Hard to image staying focused if he does play.

I hope Jordan plays. I think the game could be a nice breather for him and let him focus on something else if only for a few hours. Then again if he doesn't play its very understandable also. I think if he plays we win by 10. If Jordan is out we need Branch to play big minutes at the point and contribute. I'm predicting a win, but it would be tough without Rysheed.

Cant come out flat like we did against Butler. Xavier is good enough and will be playing with enough urgency that a flat start may be insurmountable. Do a good job on Christon and we win easily. If he goes off we'll have trouble

@StJohnsBBall: .@SJUCoachLavin said Rysheed Jordan in Phil today for the viewing of a close relative who passed away. Jordan will rejoin #sjubb tonight.

@StJohnsBBall: Lavin & Jordan will meet, assess "right thing to do" for Xavier. "Difficult time" for a young man who has experience so much loss. #sjubb

@StJohnsBBall: Lavin said @obekpa12 is on the mend and is 8.5 out of 10, health-wise. "He looked good, not 100 percent but encouraging." #SJUBB

@StJohnsBBall: Lavin also said @Orlandito0933 was back with the #SJUBB squad and practiced today.

Another Big East game that is tough to pick. Villanova was not a must win, but this one definitely is. St. John's recognizes this and takes care of business. 78-72, St. John's keeps fighting.
