2014 Big East Tournament
« on: March 04, 2014, 12:10:38 PM »
Starts in a week, so I figured I would start the thread.

As of now we're the #6 seed.  We won't be any lower than that, and we could go up as high as #4.
So we're playing at 3:30 or 9:30 next Thursday.    Correct me if I'm wrong.

First round – Wednesday, March 12
1   7:00 PM   #8 vs #9   FS1
2   9:30 PM   #7 vs #10   FS1
Quarterfinals – Thursday, March 13
3   1:00 PM   #1 vs Game 1 Winner   FS1
4   3:30 PM   #4 vs #5   FS1
5   7:00 PM   #2 vs Game 2 Winner   FS1
6   9:30 PM   #3 vs #6   FS1
Semifinals – Friday, March 14
7   7:00 PM   Game 3 Winner vs Game 4 Winner   FS1
8   9:30 PM   Game 5 Winner vs Game 6 Winner   FS1
Championship – Saturday, March 15
9   8:30 PM   Game 7 winner vs. Game 8 winner   FS1

#6 might catch a break if they are playing Xavier at #3 without Stainbrook.  I'm hoping we finish higher because of the at-large race but the #4-#5 matchup may end up being tougher.  I don't want to take anything away from X, but Stainbrook killed us inside and on the pick and roll.  Without him, they are a different team.

Providence, with their lack of depth, may have a tough time after their first game.

I'm glad we are avoiding the bottom four round, although it would mean an opportunity for an extra win (not taking it for granted, but...).  Our depth should help us with the back to back to back games.  We just need to come out focused and play well.

2 things....
1)  I'd rather play Providence or Xavier than face Marquette for the second time in a week.    And Simplyred's point about Xavier without Stainbrook, is a good one.   That's a big loss.
2) I'd rather play the late game because then I can actually see the game.   Won't be able to get off from work on Thurs.

People hoping to play Xavier remind me of Jodie Foster in Accused right before she got the pinball machine treatment.

I think the American Forces Network is covering it.

Would you rather face Xavier without Stainbrook or a healthy Marquette for the 2nd time in two weeks?  Even Providence, with their short bench, may be a tougher matchup.  I'm not ripping Xavier.  They are a very good team.  I just think their entire offensive gameplan changes without Stainbrook.

Xavier beat us.  Fairly easily.  Twice.  I'd rather not touch them with a 10 foot pole.  Stainbrook only played against us for 16 minutes at MSG, and while he was unstoppable offensively, he really didnt contribute to the dominating defensive performance, IMO (and only had 1 rebound to boot).  Just say no to X.

I'd much rather play PC.  A win against them in the BET might get us in (or close) and knock them out.

Have we avoided 7th place yet?

Another win by Gtown and loss by us would tie the two of us.

Two losses by Providence would also throw them in the bunch with us and GTown.

Beat Marquette, and we are the 5 seed, 2:30 Thursday afternoon vs., I believe, Providence.

Lose, and a Georgetown loss, and we are #6, 9:30 Thursday night vs. Xavier.

Lose, and a Georgetown win, and we are the 7 seed, would have to play Wed. night, 9:30, against the last place team (probably Butler, but could be DePaul).

Somebody correct me if I am wrong about this.

I want PC in the BET - a head to head win against them could be the difference of dancing v staying home.

So the most likely situation that I see is a three-way tie between Xavier, Providence, and St. John's at 10-8.  I think we'll dispatch of Marquette and I can't see Xavier beating Nova or Providence winning at Creighton.

In that scenario, Xavier finishes third and we play Providence in the 4/5 game.  Head to head...rubber match...loser goes home.  That game would be served up for the selection committee.  The winner of that game is in and the loser would need serious help.

Interesting to note that if we lose to Marquette and Gtown beats Nova on the road, we would finish 7th and be given an easy game against Butler/Depaul.  We'd then play Nova round two and get an easier matchup round three against Xavier, Gtown, or Providence if we were to advance.  That would put us a 22 wins, an RPI between  high 40's and low 50's, and put us in the championship game.  We'd be in. Big ifs, but there are plenty of avenues to get us in.

The Johnnies would be much better served playing Providence than Xavier. They do not match up well with Xavier at all.
