I'm not saying he made the wrong choice and I'm aware he is strictly playing baseball now but he left SJU with the intention of still playing basketball. To say he left SJU for professional baseball is a flat out lie. He left because we had too many players under scholarship and he was the player Lavin needed the least.
Unless you know something we don't, there is no proof that he was forced to transfer. In the end he did leave to play professional baseball, a sport he got a nice signing bonus.
He left to play basketball. He took a scholarship at Cal Northridge. Stop misconstruing history.
How many games did he play for Cal Northridge?

He sat out his transfer year (on the bench), and then after he blew up with the Red this summer, he announced he wasnt going back to basketball after all.

Right so he never played another game after being forced to transfer.

Take a look at his twitter posts in this article:

http://mweb.cbssports.com/ncaab/eye-on-college-basketball/24653309/two-sport-star-amir-garrett-gives-up-college-hoops-for-pro-baseball

Does that sound like a kid that was forced to transfer? IMO, no.

What are you talking about? He transferred to CS Northridge to play basketball. Those tweets are in reference to leaving Northridge and are from a year and a half after he transferred out of St. Johns. He didnt leave St. Johns for pro baseball, he left to play basketball at a different school. Ive seen Lavin use that "lost him to pro baseball" line a few times and it just isnt true.

I guess we can agree to disagree.

Do you think the quote: "Basketball has brought me close to a lot of people, and it has taken me to places I'd never thought I'd see".

is talking about Northridge or the chance to visit and play basketball in NYC?

It's not agreeing to disagree, Amir left St. John's to go to Cal State Northridge. That is fact.

"We never imagined that we would lose Maurice Harkless after his freshman year to the NBA, JaKarr Sampson after his sophomore year to the NBA, and Amir Garrett to professional baseball. Those three would be with this current team. If you add two NBA players and a guy that throws heat in the Cincinnati Reds' farm system, our bench would be deeper and a little more experienced."  That is a lie The guy transferred to another school to play basketball. Why not add Polee to that trio? He did the same thing Amir did.

Polee would have graduated already no? So he wouldn't be on the current team.

I'm not even really disagreeing that he transferred to play MORE mins of basketball at another school. I'm just questioning your statement that he was forced to transfer.

I think you are taking the "forced" part too literal. I am sure they did not give him the Robbie Benson treatment from One on One or have Suge Knight hang him out of a 5th floor window. I am sure they told him he was not going to be a major part of the program going forward and his playing time was going to disappear.

As far as Lavin's revisionist history, all coaches BS. The people who hate Lavin let it bother them for some reason and the people who love Lavin refuse to believe he does BS for some incredible reason I am not privy to.

Some of you guys are miserable. We are getting national exposure. Instead of being happy or proud their are complaints. Being critical is fine when it is warrented.

if i;m not mistaken, i believe Dave said at the time, the agreement/arrangement was 2 years at sju for Amir before he left for baseball.  so Lavin is being Lavin with wrt Amir.

Dave feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

Again, why would he "kick" out Amir and not some other lesser value player on the team? I'm not buying it and nothing anyone has said answers that most important question. I would have found the door for Jones before letting
Amir go. Amir left on his own accord.

Amir was buried on the bench behind Sir'Dom and Jakarr his sophomore year, with the addition of Hooper and Sanchez at his position and with Sheed coming in which would shift another guard to Amir's position there just wasn't any playing time available. Christian was willing to redshirt so he was more valuable.

This is a lot different than being "forced to transfer" or "kicked out" by his coach. Heck, Amir could have paid his way as a walk on if he wanted to play 7 mins a game at SJU. Instead he decided to take a full ride at another school to practice basketball with them. Good way to stay in shape I guess.

There was also mention that Hooper could walk on to open a scholarship for Sheed.

Anyway, if you are hell bent in thinking Lavin kicked Amir off the team, there is nothing anyone can say to change your mind.

Hooper and GG was buried on the bench, they were not playing over Amir. Sanchez played mostly at the five, and Dom played mostly at the three. There was time for Amir, may not have been as much as he would have liked, but its still a decision Amir made to leave. The rational that is being given is only supporting why Amir would want to leave, not why the coach would want him to leave opposed to some other player.

There was talk of Hooper being the X-factor and Gods'Gift redshirted the year Amir left so that was another forward that was going to clog up minutes upon his return.

I know it's  hard to imagine Gift and Hooper being reasons for a guy to leave but read this http://johnnyjungle.com/forum/index.php?topic=7858.20 and see what the initial reactions were.

Never has a statement been so true.
It is a shame that people would be happier if St. John's sucked this year cause it would make them right.
After this year Coach Lavin in 5 year would have taken St. John's to 2 NIT & 2 NCAA's. With his Health and Family issues he has done a good job overall, not great but good.
I think St. John's future looks bright as part of the new Big East.
I hope Coach Lavin is at St. John's for the next 10 years.
Go St. John's

"I don't feel inordinate degree of pressure to win at St. John's."
St. John's University: where your $1.5 million employee doesn't feel pressure to perform.

'I felt pressure to win at UCLA, where anything less than a Final Four is considered a disappointment. But here at Saint John's, where they've only made two final fours since World War 1, I can skate by making the NCAA tournament every couple of years, so I don't feel any pressure to win.'

Give this guy an extension, stat.
