Providence Matchups
« on: January 08, 2015, 03:20:46 PM »
I just want to get this conversation started since this has now become the biggest game on the schedule.

Kris Dunn is having a tremendous year, his stats of late have been exceptional. Everyone knows that Sheed matches his athleticism and size almost to a tee. If he were to have a great week of practice, and looks like he's returning to form, would you start him over Branch? I think it's the right button to push at this juncture, it could give the team a refreshed look, and give Sheed the mental boost he needs to get over his hurdle.

IMO, we matchup favorably against Providence, but with their students back on campus, the Dunk won't be an easy venue on a cold Wednesday night. We have to bring our A game, and matchups like Henton/Pointer and Obekpa/Desrosiers have to be won.

Matchup thoughts?

I am all for giving jordan another chance. I am fine with him playing 30 plus minutes if he earns it. But he shouldn't start any more games unless their is an injury . Chiles or Rico or someone has to get Jordan goibg this week.
As for matchups, I only saw them play brown. They didn't look good.

That would be rewarding Jordan for his awful play against Villanova.   Let him come off the bench, if he's playing smartly and with passion, then ride him for the rest of the game.
But you don't get announced with the starters after the turd he laid at the Garden on Tuesday.

PC might be where ADR leaning on DesRosiers with CO in the game as the help defender has possibilities.

Dom has to contain Henton, that's the key matchup, they're going to set a ton of screens for Henton, leaving Dee on him ala Pinkston this past Tuesday. The high ball screens create gaps in the paint and get Chris/Dom in early foul trouble, we have to overcome that.

As for Sheed, he's been humbled plenty. He has to regain his confidence, turnovers aside, he's been a key part of this offense and I wouldn't be opposed to getting him back in the starting lineup if it meant immediate results and getting squad out of their mini funk.

Jordan has 2 maybe more losses attributed to his immaturity. Time to step up or go cry back to Philly

Is Wednesday night suddenly a must win? I'd say so. Needless to say, the kinks have to be worked out, and fast.

Besides reinserting Sheed back in the starting 5, the other move that should be considered IMO is increasing Myles' minutes per game. The team desperately needs offensive production off the bench and are not getting it from  Joey or CJ. I wouldn't hesitate to give him a solid 10-12 minutes and see if he catches fire, it could prove to have a ripple effect.

Thoughts?

What has Jordan done to earn a spot in the starting lineup? He's actually only played like he should be kept as far away from the starting 5 as possible

Because he matches up against Kris Dunn to a tee and is the 2nd most talented player on the team.

He doesn't play with any interest on defense and has been a huge detriment to the team when on the court, even with his talent. Providence is hoping he plays 30 minutes and I would too if I was them

That is true in theory, but he has not played like the 2nd most talented player on the team, and short-handed or not, it doesn't help us to play anyone who isn't ready for the game. He gets his shit together, and he proves it on the court, he'll play.

Thoughts?

Don't think at must win stage yet. St. John's has four losses. Two are to top-5 teams. The third is to a ranked team on their home court. The fourth is the worst and it is to a top-30ish butler team, which isn't a bad loss though one they should have won. Probably need ~10 wins in conference, so this game @ providence isn't a must win.

you do have excellent points, but I'd still say this one is more of a mental must-win. This team needs its confidence and swagger back, they need to remember what it feels like to get a hard fought W. I think if we can take this game, we can become the dangerous team we were in Nov/Dec.

True, could definitely use the win for confidence.  those losses seemed mentally exhausting too, especially for dlo. I feel bad for him

It's as much of a must win as a team could have in the middle of January

It's a must win.
If we lose Weds, there would be 14 conference games left and we would need to go 10-4 to get to your magic number of 10 conference wins. (Which I think is an accurate barometer).  That's asking too much.  We need to start crawling out of this hole, dig it any deeper and the season is officially over.
And I don't think that's pessimistic, truthfully, at 0-4 we're just not making the tournament.

Every win in college sports is a must win. So to speak.  It's not like in pro sports where u can lose by 30 to a team in the NBA one night and win the next, the standings say 1-1.  In college sports a team always tries to build a resume.  Think like this, if sju loses to njit, it stays with them throughout the year, no matter how they do the rest of season. So by commitee terms it's a must win, whether it's game 1 or 30.

Now, here we are at 0-3 with no bad loses. If sju wins at providence, their record is 1-3, however it's a good win for their resume , yet they are still a bottom team in league.  That win goes a long way based on how both teams do rest of way.  In pro sports, a team can beat a good team but it still looks the same as if they beat a bad team.

So in essence, this is a must win, as is every game. All games won't be wins but whether they were 3-0, this would still be a must win  because they are always building resume wins.

Last year, we didn't have enough players that bought into the team concept. This year, we have one player who hasn't. Jordan plays the way he did last year vs Georgetown and @Providence, and we can turn this slow start around. If he's a zombie throughout the season, we're going to the NIT. Well, Jordan will probably have an ear infection.

Yes, Jordan is a talented player obviously who could be a difference maker. That said, man is he in a fog. Can he snap out of it ? We'll see. If not, beat Robert Morris I guess.
