How many NYC kids want to stay in NYC though? If you are a top prospect you can go just about anywhere?

Zach wrote a nice article it is about time Lavin gets some heat from the sports writers around here. With the Knicks being so irrelevant and all the early season hype with St. John's great start has put the spotlight on Lavin. He was eating it up making his rounds but now that the real games have started Lavin's teams have shrunk as usual. This team doesn't know how to win and that is all on the coaching staff, not just Lavin but all the useless other yes men that sit on the bench and collect nice salaries from SJU. They don't know how to do the little things to put themselves in position to win over the last 5 minutes of games. They can play any team in America toe to toe for 35 minutes but what does that mean if you don't know how to win  those games ever. I cannot remember a well run play out of a timeout in over 5 years. We have a coach who can't coach, can't and doesn't want to recruit, can't control his players and a majority of them dislike him, but he is great at one thing and that is smoozing the boosters and any higher ups at St. John's. The perception of this guy coming in was spot on. He had us all fooled because he injected life into this program recruiting every top player in the country when he first showed up weather they had a chance at ever playing or not. The offseason was fun but the second the school year began the problems started and haven't stopped 5 years later. Time for a change.

Re: NYC coaches allegedly being upset that Lavin isn't recruiting the city.
Where were these coaches before Lavin got here?  Where were all the top recruits that these coaches wanted to go to St. John's?  If you wouldn't send your kids here when we sucked, don't be shocked if we return the favor once we're relevant.
I'm not saying I agree with it, just presenting it as a possibility.

They did send kids here.  Malik Boothe, Eugene Lawrence,Daryl Hill, Justin Burrell,Ryan Williams, Lamont Hamilton,,Dexter Gray,Mike Cavataio, Rickey Torres,Rob Thomas,Dwight Hardy,Omari Lawrence

Well now I'm confused.  If all the top recruits were coming here when Norm was here, why were we still so bad?

Most of the good players left to play in Jersey

Right...which is what I said.  I presented the possibility that they sent the good players elsewhere when we sucked, and now that we've become relevant, they are upset that Lavin doesn't want to talk to some of them.  You went from contradicting my post to reinforcing it by repeating it....your mind games are working, I am utterly confused.

Can anybody provide a logical reason as to why our staff hasn't put the full court press on Alkins? Sounds like the staff hasn't even expressed the slightest bit of interest in him. Usually when a top 20 kid plays 10 minutes from your campus you recruit him. Am I wrong?

Lavin is here because the coach who was brought in to solve our NYC recruiting failures couldn't. The philosophy was to look elsewhere. I'm not saying that it's worked, but it's clearky worked better than targeting punks like Stephenson and Landesberg only to find out that you've been played.

Nyc kids are massively overrated. Looking outside NY is a good idea in theory.

What a completely ridiculous statement. If we landed even half of the best NYC players of the past decade we would have been to a couple sweet 16s and maybe a final 4.

Also like how you call kids punks just because they chose to go somewhere else. Landesberg is a punk because he didn't show up to art class for a semester? Our entire 2010-2011 team were punks too by that logic.

Responding to a previous poster about the Arbitello beef with lavin having something to do with a nephew or in law is true. heard from the grapevine a family member is a freshmen there and wanted to be on the team as a walk on and Lavin supposedly "promised" arbs he would be on the team. Only Lavin didnt put him on the team, reasonably so if I might add, causing Arbitello to unleash on twitter about Lavin on BE media day.  Also heard from people Arbitello isnt the nicest guy either. Im not with Lav on the recruiting side but am against Arbitellos banter.

Still don't understand the logic behind taking 2014 off. When does Chiles start catching some heat?
i have read that they took the year off 100 times already. What does that even mean? They brought in 5 players including Thomas. They tried to get Whitehead. I don't think it was a great class but if Adonis is good it isn't a bad one either.
Article is fair
Tony, who did they bring in who can play. Walkons don't count, nor does Thomas. You want to count the A&J DR brothers, OK but they really don't add anything to the 2014 class. We saw this happening in real time, but it became more glaring when Jordan went home that we did not have anyone who could play off the bench.  You take exception when it's said the staff took 2014 off and thats ok. Up until this year I took exception to anything negative said about coach Lavin. Since the guys recruited in year one I can't figure anyone who can play outside of Obekpa and Jordan. Thats 2 players in 3 recruiting classes. Thats why we are down to a skeleton of a team. If the staff was working it was not fruitful.. Marco couldn't play, Hooper couldn't play, and a bunch of other guys who are here now shouldn't be.  Now if coach comes out of 2015 with a great class it can be figured his way of going about things only effected the 2014-15 season. It hurts the core kids who are here now, but could be enough to keep the program going. If 2015 class does not materialize how many years you figure it will take to be back?

Not that this is some huge accomplishment but I do give credit to Lav and staff for getting Stewart and Henderson to come here without a scholarship when both could have easily went to school elsewhere.

I believe Stewart will be under scholarship come next year.

NYC talent has not been good in quite some time. Lavin has gotten the best player out of NY in his tenure here. Moe Harkless. The only other notable is Whitehead and Lav was not going to hire Tiny to get him.

Seriously start naming guys from NYC that Lav should have brought here?

Today, 5:15 pm, Cardozo at Christ the King.

I wish that there will be St. John´s coaches in this game.

Dave Chilleb's post on another thread listed a ton of guys who were more 4 year/depth players. My view is that we got after the big fish in NYC always - Mo, Whitehead, Lawrence, CO - but have not landed the Carringtons of the world.

Lavin certainly got a lot of good will out of that slice of pizza he bought you.
