i know theres nothing anyone could ahve done about it, but this team would be just so much better
if Sampson had returned.    Jakarr for all his weaknesses could rebound, played excellent D when he wanted to, and was another shot blocker.
Were missing a true PF.

Agreed, we all had high hopes for Rysheed.   And he clearly has the ability.
But to say hes been inconsistent would be generous.
How many games this season would you say he's had a "good" game?   4? 5?
without looking, i cant remember more than that.     And thats pretty weak for a guy predicted to be 1st or 2nd team all conference.

What do y'all think Marcus Hatten would've done tonight, once he knew Harrison and Obekpa wasn't gonna be of much help?   

I had this one chalked up as a loss.  Besides Nova, we match up with Gtown worse than anyone else in the conference when Smith is playing.  Killed us on the boards, which was my fear, and Smith and Hopkins opened everything up for their wings/guards.  And we obviously didn't play anywhere as near as well as we have the last few.  As Baldi said, the important piece was getting a split over these last 2, with this one being gravy.

My concern is the big picture health of Obekpa and Harrison.  Both kids battled today, but are clearly hurt and their injuries didn't improve at all from Saturday (not totally unexpected).  Fingers crossed these next 3 days makes a difference from a healing perspective.  If we get them healthy, I actually think we can run the table leading up to the Big East tourney, or at worst go 3-1 which probably puts us on the right side of the bubble going into the tournament. 

What Baldi, Dinkins and others said about Jordan tonight is spot on.  When Harrison isn't scoring we have no shot unless we get points from Jordan (or some type of unexpected output from Branch).  Jordan should have all kinds of opportunities against the Hall on Saturday.  Let's hope he brings his B game at least.

I think the issue tonight was Obekpa's and Harrison's injuries more than anything.  G'town was getting offensive rebounds when Smith was sidelined and Obekpa was out.  Obekpa made Hopkins look like a chump last season at MSG.  Blocking his shots, and had him hesitating, afterwards.

Obekpa would have more trouble with Smith due to his big body.  But I still believe a healthy-Obekpa would be a bit of a problem for him.   

As, I said earlier in the thread....  Jordan and Harrison (although, he was hurt) was MIA, and Obekpa was injured.  That isn't a recipe for us to beat anyone.  Jordan has to step up on those situations, but he didn't tonight.  We're gonna need him to play well for us to get to the dance.

We need to sweep Xavier and beat G'town in a couple of weeks.  Win Saturday and beat Marquette in the last game of the season, and we'll be 10-8.  We have a stronger RPI than we did a season ago, so I believe we'll be fine in that particular scenario before the conference tournament even starts.

It probably feels longer because many of those games weren't close.  I believe our last close game versus the Hoyas on the road was the game where Courtland Freeman tipped-in a shot at the buzzer during the 2003-2004 season.  The same season where we got our only conference win....  against the Hoyas at MSG.   

EDIT: Actually, we played them close on New Year's Eve during the 2009-2010 season.  I just thought about that game.  That one came down to the last couple of minutes.

Congratulations to Phil Greene IV who netted a game high 18 points; passing Harry "Jeff" Boykoff and Mel Davis to move into 37th place on the St. John's University all-time scoring list!

Boykoff was the tall half (6' '9") of the famed "Mutt and Jeff" combo along with star guard Hy Gotkin.  Boykoff led St. John's to the Nit title when it was the national championship and was voted NIt tournament Mvp in that 1942/43 season. Held the Madison Square Garden single game scoring record, tallying 45 pts. against St. Joseph.

Ex. Knick Davis was a "man's man" and virtual rebounding machine.  Averaged 16.1 rebounds and 20.8 pts. per game in the 1070/71 season.  Then repeated the seemingly unrepeatable the following season averaging 15,1 boards and 21.1 points per game in the 1971/72 campaign.

Harry Boykoff and Mel Davis were undisputedly two of the greatest players we've ever had.

Hope so.

I don't want to say we lost because of the officiating but games like this infuriate me.  We started the game off aggressive, took it to the hoop and played good defense.  The refs were clearly in our guys heads and we completely changed.  I don't ever like a T but Lavin needed to take one because the team was out of sync.  Instead he never corralled our teams emotion, Jordan responded to get a T and we continued to bitch.  Not only did he not defend his guys, he called ONE timeout the entire game and that was with less than a minute to go in first half when he had to blow it or lose it.  Even the 2nd half we responded by coming out and taking it to the hoop and did not get calls and our guys continued to whine.  It's frustrating that seniors act this way but that's who they are and they clearly won't change now. 

Can't wait to see these guys next week and take it to them.  I know the score says they smoked us but I am very confident we beat them easily next game.  Bring out that weak pressure JTIII and lets see what happens with the officiating at the hoop when we attack the tin at home. 

Some will say our defense will never stop them but it was a lot easier for those gtown guys to shoot up 10+.  When the game was close they didn't hit shit and I suspect it will be like that next time.  Guess we will see.
