We have been winning so can't really complain but seems odd. Every once in a while yea sure but little too often for my taste.

Does he do it to keep the crowd cheering? Other than that, they are bizarre

He did it at least 3 times tonight. I felt like every time it happened, X just had a good play called and they scored off of it.

Without further information any discussion is pointless. Who made the basket and who called the time out and what's the game situation. If you're asking about the nice personic time outs Lavin calls at random when his team has scored six points in row up to go up five with nine minutes left that's one thing. If you're talking about a time out called after a team scores to cut a lead to three to stop the clock with a 30 seconds left it's another.

They played almost the entire game with 6 players with only 2 days rest. They expended an enormous amount of energy in the first half. I would think they needed breaks to stay really focused. don't know the answer but give Lavin the benefit of the doubt it seems to be working.

I don't understand it.  To be fair, I've seen more and more "prominent" coaches doing it this season.  So maybe it's something Steve saw at a clinic last summer.

But also, to Fun's point, Lavin does it at random.   Thad Matta, Bo Ryan, Krzyscewski... they seem to only do it in late game situations when they want to setup their D and make an offense for defense substitution.

I think most of them are dumb, but maybe he is calling them to get our guys a blow.  Most times it seems the other team needs a TO, but hey we are what 19-8 I guess its working.

i think he's trying to preserve the kids with such a short bench

Posted this in the game thread :

While the timeouts are weird, they seem to  have  a purpose. Lavin is continually encouraging the team to quickly get back on defense after they make a big basket. Maybe he thinks he has an advantage by setting up the defense vs. just scrambling around?

Don't always like it, but it makes sense (at times).

-he's not the only coach who does this

To the people who are saying hes trying to get our starters some rest:  Wouldn't a timeout at any point offer our guys a rest?

Why call them after we make a basket?
Wouldn't a stretch where we give up 3 or 4 buckets and look tired be a more oppertune time to rest them?

When it allows another team to gain an advantage - a la getting Stainbrook back in on the offensive end - it is even more odd.

It's a quirky thing, but not a big deal.  I just think he wants to set the defense and get in their ear .

I think it's getting crazy but Mack did it tonight also with his last TO. That one I didn't understand he could have used it at the end. To me these coaches OVERcoach at the end of games. Let the the play happen.

I don't like it myself but would love to hear the reason behind it. I don't recall him doing it last year.

I think it kills runs, but I'm not getting paid the big bucks to make that decision.

Mack did it twice in the last 4-5 minutes that i counted.

Mack must be a terrible coach, that's the only explanation.

He could have saved those timeouts to go offense/defense with Harrison as often as possible once Harrison picked up his 4th foul. Ultimately whatever happened worked though. I can't be too tough on Lavin after a win even if I feel like sometimes they win despite of him and not because of him

I think he was trying to preserve D'lo & Obekpa (both w/ 4 fouls) by avoiding over-aggressiveness on the D when the crowd got into it.

It did kill our momentum and allow Xavier to setup successful plays on three different occasions though.
