4 states have legalized it for recreational use.  Probably more than half have it for medical use.  Yet we go into the tournament without a center.

It is still illegal at the federal level, whether you feel it should be or shouldn't.  The NCAA has a code of conduct that wasn't followed.  If you were employed in Colorado and the company you worked for did not allow smoking pot, would you still smoke? It seems really simple to me.

Poison, your posts on this thread are disgusting and I'm embarrassed we root for the same program.  You honestly wanted Lavin and this UNIVERSITY to withhold that info until after the seeding and then announce to the world right after?  Do you have any idea how dirty that is?  Can you even imagine the backlash that would have created.

Some of you guys are just unreal.  Grow up.  These are student athletes....this is COLLEGE basketball.  How some of you guys can try to blame Lavin for what Obekpa does in his dorm/apartment, is just crazy.  You can't have girls in your room past a certain hour at SJU...was my football coach at SJU responsible for when my gf slept over my dorm?  Of course not.

I would say most people are ticked at Lavin for not properly recruiting players...Let's change it to CO got ticked off and punched a wall and broke his hand and he couldnt play. The issue is  the team doesn't have players to replace him...The team was already trying to stretch other players minutes so he could get a breather or avoid foul trouble.

The lack of recruits might have also created a culture of getting away with crap...CO's attitude from last year, Jordan's attitude from this year. If this team was fully stocked would Jordan have survived this season? Can you imagine if both Jordan and CO were gone?

Roberts was criticized for having a FULL roster graduate all at once. Lavin couldn't even do that...He somehow how one upped Roberts....

CO is a selfish person with zero common sense but we knew parts of that from last year...
SJU and Lavin did do the right thing, BUT this team was never at full strength and just like Lavin's offense we still have no ideal of what the overall "rebuilding" plan for SJU is. When you constantly have these students issues it becomes a you problem and Lavin has a big you problem at the moment.
Like Choz used to say. This here is wisdom. Except for last year, when it took Lavin half the season to figure out who to play. We have always had imbalanced or short rosters. Having 6 serviceable players in year 5 is inexcusable. One injury or suspension, becomes devastating. And things arnt looking good for next year.

And it is still illegal in 46 states and at the federal level. But whether its legal or not, its is against the rules. Even players in Colorado have to abide by the NCAA drug policy. Obepka knew that, and did not comply. End of story. Those suggesting Lavin or the school should have covered this up or looked the other way are nuts.

Coach Lavin is going nowhere but StJ. Chris is going nowhere as well unless he wants to star in the Sumatra League league for $25.000 next year.  He has tarnished his image not only with us and our team but with the pros as well. He ain't that good and they ain't risk takers.
BTW, had he been at Syracuse, they would have shut up, covered up, lawyered up, and played ball.   I am happy and proud that we are Catholic, BE, open and honest, and stand on principles.  Coach Lavin is our leader. Sometimes things work out for the student, read D'Angelo, and sometimes it doesn't. Chris hurt himself more than he hurt us. That is sad.

1) Lavin reported it because he had to.

2) Obekpa clearly hurt the team more than he hurt himself.  To the extent that he was being considered a prospect for the Dleague or Europe, he still is.   These scouts couldn't care less that he smokes weed.
I doubt he was an NBA player anyway, but his standing with pro scouts is practically unchanged.
His teammates however are severally undermanned in the biggest moment of their college careers.

While I agree that it should be legalized in all states--it is a cause for suspension in not only the NCAA but by every major sports league

I don't know if anyone brought this up, but could this explain why D'Angelo had a black eye and Felix was out with an eye injury? Makes me think the team may have known what happened right before the Big East Tournament game and I know Balamou is one of Chris's good friends. Probably a huge conspiracy, but they all looked uninterested and pissed off during the Providence game (before being down 17 points).
'

I was thinking EXACTLY this earlier today.  What if Obekpa, Jordan, and Balamou were all out one night and something happened...and Dee punched Balamou, etc.  Jordan was out but no transgressions so he just gets benched.  I havent developed it fully but I could totally see the two being tied together.

It's not even worth it anymore. Time to wipe the slate clean. New coach, new AD, new players. time to rid that culture

Massiello. You don't come late to his practices.

How many times has Lawrence been suspended under Mas?

Why were 2 kids kicked off Archie's team for a dorm room theft incident? Why does Archie's team only have 8 scholarship players and no one over 6'6"?

The same reasons we are killing Lavin are okay for coaches at other schools?

But can they recruit? That is the question. You will not win in the Big East if you don't have talent. The talent disparity is minimal in the MAAC and most one bid leagues. Jump to the big boy conference and if you can't bring in the talent you will be bottom dwellers.

Basically my point was that just about every coach can be picked apart if you look at the whole picture. Fans of a team will always be harder on their coach than other coaches that they don't follow that closely.

If you watch Dayton they use a lot of high ball screens and dribble drive. It looked a lot like our offense. The difference with mid majors (IMO) is in the recruiting. Usually a few teams can out recruit the rest of the conference which gives them a great advantage. Once these coaches move up a level and the playing field evens out a bit their great coaching isn't so great.

Not taking anything away from the above mentioned coaches as I do think they are doing a great job currently but it would be a crap shoot if they were to come coach at SJU.

No idea. But to use Anthony Grant as an example. I believe he has brought 2 Top 6 recruiting classes to Alabama and he is now looking for a new job.

But would they be able to bring in these same level of players, or would we be back to the Norm years (waiting 5 years to have a team that can win 20 games and dance).  That is the million dollar question and why I think there is some hesitancy on the part of those who criticize Lavin (like myself), are not happy with the constant drama, but acknowledge the talent level he has brought.  Would the Hurleys, Mass, or Miller get a kid like Brandon Sampson from Louisiana?

As I've told Baldi, as big of a Lavin supporter as I've been, I am sick of the constant drama, player conduct issues, and the fact that he took off the 2014 recruiting to the point where our bench is so barren that JDR will be playing meaningful minutes in a tourney game (no knock on the kid, but he wasn't a contributor at FIU).  Yes this happens at other schools, but other schools have guys off the bench who are either good or develop to become solid role players.  It is going to piss me off to no end when San Diego St. is playing catch on the offensive glass because we have no front court simply because of one player's transgressions.  That should not be happening.

I think those in Lavin's camp believe that if we lose him we are going back to the Norm years.  I don't buy that.  If the school is willing to commit resources -- and Lavin has showed that even some success will get fans in the seats at the Garden and Carnecessa - we can get a guy who can recruit balanced rosters and coach em up.  Every coach before Norm - Jarvis, Fran, Mahoney -- pulled in some very good players.  I have to believe this job is attractive enough to get a good candidate who will do the same, without all of the nonsense we've been dealing with as a fan base.

And I don't buy the argument that Lavin and the staff shouldn't have seen this coming.  Anyone who watched Harkless play his first 10 games as a frosh knew that he was lasting, at most, to his sophomore year (and that was being optimistic).  It was likewise very easy to see last season that Jakar declaring early was a distinct possibility.  If Christian Jones cant play at this level, he should have been told that there are other programs in which he can play more, and we should have grabbed a JUCO or two to provide depth in case of an injury or conduct issues (especially with what transpired with Chris last year).

Wow, there are some serious Aholes on this forum. Now it's Lavin's fault that some knucklehead smoked pot in violation of team rules? And that SJ didn't try to pull a fast one on the selection committee? Might want to ask Carneseca how many of his players were smoking pot back in his day; you might be surprised. Coaching is like herding cats. You just hope they don't rape or murder someone.

You crybaby "fans" deserve to suck for all of eternity. Where did you think this team would end up 10 months ago? Did anyone here think this was an NCAA Tourney team last spring?

Lav will be gone soon and you'll have some unknown guy take over and not see the Tourney again for a decade.

I don't really disagree with your entire post so I just quoted the part I do disagree with. Creighton had a balanced roster this year with one of the best coaches in the conference and they only won a few (3?) games this year. You need a stud or two also.

From a basketball standpoint, all suspensions etc aside, is the program in much better shape than it was 5 years ago? Lavin brought in talent, so what? What has he done with it? Its time to move on
