The funny thing is, as bad as the staff has been this past year on the recruiting trail, if we get Diallo, we are a sweet sixteen talent team next year. That's with the assumption that CO and Jordan return, which they should. Lavin took some chances with some recruits and it didn't pan out. How can anyone say we are starting over if we are conceivably one realistic recruit away..

It's pretty simple actually ... lets make the assumption that CO And RJ don't come back, who on this current team will be starting next year?  Hence we would be starting over.  And if Diallo commits, we would be starting over with some pretty talented guys, but certainly players who might not be here for 3 or 4 years.

I don't know if they are coming back, but the way things have gone in the past, I don't think the assumption that both of them won't return is overly farfetched.  CO was going to leave last summer (or did leave) and RJ is flakier than a crescent roll.

Yes if you assume every good player we have will leave but I feel we need to stop assuming CO/and or Jordan will go pro. There is nothing from their game that would warrant that conclusion. Last year when CO was considering leaving SJU it was to transfer, not go pro. Every time we land a top 100 kid he's leaving after 1-2 years. I recall reading posts suggesting Harrison would be leaving early. We need to stop that. There are more top 100 kids who stay all four years than leave early and go pro, that's the reality. RJ and CO are not pro players at this point in their careers, they will be back next year. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong. But until then leaving is for certain, I'm looking at CO, Jordan, and Sampson, a eligible Delarosa, Amir with a year under his belt.

I don't assume every good player is leaving, unfortunately things go on with this program that are left unexplained ... not that I deserve an explanation. To my understanding CO and PG4 did leave last spring, and had to be recruited back.  And they weren't going pro ... they were transferring.  How bad must things be for someone like PG4 who was entering his senior year to transfer.  Willing to sit out a year, just to play one more year.  You have already seen all these mystery problems with RJ.  He misses games with issues like a toothache or stomach ache, or problem with his family.  I am not saying that these issues aren't valid, but when you see these things happen on a regular basis, doesn't it make you wonder what is going on, and what shoe is going to drop next.

I hope everyone stays, and I don't have any information that tells be they will leave, other than the what seems to be the strangest behavior of any class  of St John's students that I can remember.

You said that you don't understand where the thought that "we will be starting over" originates, and I am explaining why I think that way.  I think there are a lot of posters here who won't believe that our returning players and new players will be here next year, until the start of next season, because lately you just never know with this program.

Again, I challenge anyone to show me where, other than on a message board, where it was reported that Phil was transferring.  Show me a tweet by him or one of his teammates.  Please, nothing from Jayon or Maven.

Sorry, I was looking for something, a statement or report maybe, contemporaneous to the time that he was planning to transfer.  Not an article from February of this year from Zach Braziller, with a thrown in line regurgitating what he read on this board.  I've never heard Phil say that he was thinking about transferring.  I've never heard one of his teammates or coaches casually mention that they are glad he changed his mind and stayed.  Nothing.  Just BS from this board, now being repeated by a reporter.

The article is fair and accurate

The school needs to aspire to be at the top of the Big East.

We are a NYC team in the biggest market, that is what the new Big East needs and what UA signed up for.

I never understood why we don't make the investment into the program in a bigger way. St. John's has always had the ability to be a cash cow if the investments were made into the program.

i think the school with the Lavin hire and the budget he's been given for staff and overall resources, is at or very near max.  i can't see them spending more than they are now.  spending 2mill+ on a head coach is not sustainable.
I thought they get big money from Fox.

Lol, whatever.  Believe what you want.  I'm sure the author made it up.  Tell you what though, the next time I see Phil I'll ask him, and report back to you.
