NC State the "St. John's of the ACC?"
« on: March 26, 2015, 11:38:42 PM »
SB Nation's Duke Report had a summary of crazy comments made by players and bloggers alike made during the week.

There was one blogger who decided to tie back in the old Lavin-Gottfried connection. And he let loose, only to eat a big, heaping crow pie for predicting NC State's demise. Here's the excerpt which shows, well, disrespect to both coaches, earned or not.

"It's pretty foolish stuff. The author signs himself Young Buck, which maybe gets him a bit of a pass, but stuff like this? Geez:

"This is not your father’s Jimmy Valvano-coached NC State Wolfpack. They are headed by Mark Gottfried, who is a player’s coach in that he's technically responsible to coach players. Gottfried employs an ‘inmates run the asylum’ type philosophy, which isn’t exactly equipped for something already called ‘March Madness."They are not a team that does the little things: diving on the floor, making the extra pass, and taking the charge. NC State is the St. John’s of the ACC, minus the toughness and redeeming chip on their shoulder. I guess that makes Gottfried a member of Steve Lavin’s ‘Used Car Salesmen Lampooning as a College Coach’ brethren. This is exactly the type of loosely-bound roster that plays right into Villanova’s hands."'Nova has established themselves as one of the most clockwork-like teams in the country; they make the occasional mistake but overall are a finely-tuned machine. In stark contrast, NC State is as erratic a team as you'll see in the round of 32. There is almost no chance that NCSU can go forty minutes playing mostly-perfect basketball, and that is what it takes to defeat these Wildcats."

I appreciated the toughness/chip on the shoulder quote...Foad might like his writing style :)

Obviously he was wrong in saying they had no shot at beating Nova, but is he wrong on the general eval of NC State?  NC State could beat (Duke, UNC, Louisville, Nova) or lose to (Clemson, WF, BC) any team on a given night.  They're basically SJU on steroids...

Used car salesman. That's what people think of Lavin. I hear it all the time.

I'm not totally disagreeing.  It's an interesting comparison. It's so interesting to me because Lavin and Gottfried were together.  Gottfried was struggling to find a gig and was lucky he knew Yow.

Gotcha.  That makes sense.  Good talent + weak coaching = very up and down.

They are St. John's with two guys we went hard after and missed:   Anya and Malik Abu.  Trade Obekpa and Amar for those two, and we'd be in the same spot or better.

Nova just didn't have the athletic ability to stay with NC State, but they had the size/strength to beat us after wearing us down for 30 minutes.  Anya negated all of that himself and Abu was just to long and athletic.

Barber and the other guard...Nova couldn't stay with them.

The only real athlete on Nova is Ennis and he wasn't even as athletic as NC States guys. I've notice the Big East was less athletic across the board than most of the teams they faced.  Weird.  I'm not sure if I've ever noticed that before.

Agreed, big east also looked small compared to some of these teams. Kinda looked like they got manhandled
