This garbage has got to stop. Stop recruiting kids who can't get their shit together.

The reason this kid was available to us was because he bounced around high schools and was an eligibility risk.  Kansas wanted him to prep and join the '16 class.

Recruiting high character and high upside kids with questionable academic records is a perfectly sensible talent acquisition strategy if it is used sparingly and depth is sufficient.  Lavin recruited kids with questionable character and rolled the dice too frequently.  This is different (hopefully).

Don't you think bouncing around high schools and being an academic risk are two immediate red flags..?

Bouncing around HS is the cause of the academic risk in this case, from what I understand. So that's a singular red flag to me.  Nick Irvin could be another red flag, but I'll give the new staff the benefit of the doubt.

If the kid is a good teammate, is a cultural fit, and has a high ceiling, he's worth the risk. I wouldn't make multiple big dice rolls at a time  (i.e. Keith Thomas and Adonis to fill the one position of need) to ensure sufficient depth. But again, that isn't the case here.

Its amazing, the NCAA can't give schools an answer on Lovett and a kid like Diallo but the kid with a fake transcript last season got through the NCAA Clearinghouse and only got looked at again because of an issue with a teammate.

The department that handles this is 6 people. This is where the problem lies.

Have you seen this kid?  I'd waste a scholarship for three years for a 50/50 shot of him playing as a senior.  If he had a 90 average and 1200 SAT score he'd be somewhere like Duke.  If things go like many expect, the staff won't have to take risks.  As it is now, they covered themselves with Mussini.  Anyone that has a problem with Lovett is just being unreasonable.

Is there any chance Yakwe is eligible this season?  or are we pretty much resigned to him starting to play next season?

My source from OSNA who has NOT been reliable in the past says he'll be eligible....says so will Diallo.....players in their class in same situation have already been cleared.   We'll see.......  I wouldn't count on it.

It would be a bonus, but the truth is that the fact we have him on the roster is a huge plus regardless.  We aren't likely going anywhere this year, and with a year under his belt, he'd likely be even bigger impact.

1.  We dont know that yet.

2.  Mullin had a month or so to put 9 guys together to try to field a competitive team.  Why WOULDNT he take a chance on Lovett, the most talented of all of them, if he thought there was at least a 50% chance he might be eligible.

If Lavin was still coach, I'd agree with you, but Mullin had no other choice.

I completely agree that Mullin had very little time to field a team, but it leaves a bad taste in your mouth to go through this every season, regardless of who is the coach. At some point, it becomes less about the coach, and more about the University, who clearly, has dropped the ball countless times over the last 5 years.

It's Lavin's or Mullin's job to check report cards. But it's someone's job, and it's about damn time they did it.

To a certain extent, it's the nature of CBB to have to sweat out these situations.  That said, Mullin is recruiting higher calibre kids, character wise.  We should have less of these situations going forward, but there will always be some.  It affects tons of schools.

IMO LoVett will be cleared (based on what I'm hearing), & that'll be good because he's a great prospect.  I was worried about Sima as well, seems to have worked out.  Let's see how things play out with ML.

I'll say a prayer LOL.

I actually think it's better if Yawke isn't cleared this year. Team will be more ready to compete next season.

But how will it look for Chris Mullin if he wins 7 games this year? I think it's easier to dismiss an experienced coach in a situation like that and not bother to consider the inherited roster and state of the program's incoming talent.

He needs enough talent to show that he can coach. Otherwise how can recruits see what they are committing to?

We won 13 in 2011-2012 with six freshmen and a D-2 JUCO against the craziest schedule ever.  Do you really think a team with four seniors and two sophs will lose less with an easier schedule?

I'd rather get an extra year from a 5th year senior down the line in meaningful season than get an extra win or two in a rebuilding year.

If our recruiting is what we all hope it will be and appears to be we won't need to have Yakwe for 5 years we will get plenty of players down the line. And what if he turns out to be really good and leaves in four years or less, we will have wasted him for a year. Let's be as good as possible this year and open even more eyes of prospective recruits and we can sure use a stud rebounder and depth up front.

Recruiting class will be done before the team even plays 7 games. So really has no impact.

Say LoVett doesn't clear, for argument's sake...

Mussini
Ron MV
DJ
Darien Williams
Sima

Ellison
Amar
Felix.....

We should still win our share of games.

This staff will maximize the talent available and go from there.

and then we are feeding Ponds, Yakwe, Freudenberg,Ahmed hopefully...  that's the blueprint, with Owens next year also as a big.

the home run class could include Maker & Alkins -- nice to fantacize.

We the die hards understand rebuilding and aren't going anywhere.  Heck, I went to a bunch of games in the 1 win Showtime season.

But I fear the type of losing we're in line for will temper the Mullin buzz and lead to same ole same ole meager attendance figures and few back page headlines.

Which is better:

Is this a serious question? Mussini, Williams and Sima have way more upside than any one of those players mentioned from that past team. I barely remember that past group and for good reason. Even from Day 1, I'd still take the current group over that one.

Lets not disparage the careers of Showtime and Monty.

This is a fear I have had as well about the upcoming season. Everything has been positive up until now. If we have a bad year you are crazy if you think other coaches aren't whispering into recruits ears that Mullin isn't a good coach and we also lose the media buzz we have had since his hiring.

The only prediction I will make on this season is based on SJU luck and how NCAA operates we will still be discussing Lovett's eligibility well into December

Sure folks will whisper that to recruits, but at the end of the day we will be fine. Look at Wojo at Marquette. He had a tough year, but gets a pass as he put together a sterling recruiting class this season, despite "whispers". Can he or Mullin coach? Time will tell, but I sense both will be successful.

I agree with Dave's point about Yakwe. Sitting out a year will enable him to get stronger & refine his skills. He will then join Ponds, Owens, probably Ahmed & another quality recruit (Freudenberg?) to form a very good cadre of new players. There was some chatter that, even if eligible this year, they would red shirt Yakwe. Actually I would favor that. Take your lumps this year, compete well next year & make some real noise after that. Works for me.
