Other than a few teams where it never happens teams for numerous reasons go thru a 1-2 year rebuilding project, including established programs.

And not necessarily because of NCAA sanctions.

Michigan went 16-16.  I always use the Villanova story.

Villanova was 9-5 in 2010-2011 season.  They then proceeded to lose 5 straight league games (in fact their last win was an OT win at DePaul)., 4 straight regular season and then lost to USF in the play-in game.  They then lost the first round NCAA game for a 6 game losing streak.

2011-12 was WORSE.  They went 5-13 in the league.   Add it up that means that stretch of league games Villanova was 5-18 over that 23 game league stretch. The following year they lost to Columbia by double digits at home.   They did finish 10-8 and made the NCAA's.  But that was a real poor/mediocre stretch for the same Nova program that is the class of the BE.  And that team had people like Malik Waayns and Corey Fisher etc and did not deal with NCAA sanctions.

Heartbreaking ruling, yet Loughlinguy put things in good perspective w the appeals process which sort of puts me at ease with the whole thing, this decision was made long ago. Marcus taking night classes was almost self admitting that it was a stretch to begin with. On the bright side, we now have Mullin and Mitch developing him for the next half decade.

I'll still be watching or attending every home game, and traveling 3-4X to see this team improve every week. Looking forward to the maturation process from the coaches to the players. Mullin will have this team in peak condition by next month, and I expect a few BE upsets that will have us giddy.

Nothing will come easy this year, but the victories will be savored. It's been a long time since San Diego St., and  I'm looking forward to the ball being thrown up tomorrow night.

Is Lovett definitely going to stay at the school? You assume he would but wouldn't be the first time with something like this for us. Again it seems like he's committed and a year of him practicing then having 4 more years would be awesome. But as with St. John's when something can go wrong it will.

He won't stay five years.  He'll probably play one or two.  Without this ruling it might have been two or three.  Face it, we lost a year of his talent, period.

Can somebody explain why he has enough HS credits to practice, but not enough to play games?

And why he can't be eligible for 2nd half?

NCAA issue with LoVett boils down to them questioning how he made up so much work in last year

So if the kid did bust his ass to get the work done, his reward is having to sit a year because the NCAA didn't think it was possible?

@prepbullseye: It's almost as if the NCAA refuses to believe that LoVett actually worked his tail off academically over last yr without taking shortcuts.

This didn't upset me at all . This is what happens to St. John's fans.

Take your head out of your ass. This didn't happen to Saint John's fans. It happened to a child. He can maybe vote, he can't drink, and he can't play college basketball. It has nothing to do with you.

So before a player gets here you're all warm and gooey about the fickle fate of what might befall a "child".

But when said "child" begins playing here, it's open season to rip them unmercifully for their errors and deficiencies.

Interesting.

Ataway Quan!  This team does have some great fans.  Just not enough of them.

And that's why the university is advising LoVett to take legal action as opposed to SJU filing.  I'm sure they can advise him in the matter.

The irony here is LoVett did more school work in the past year than the entire North Carolina team did combined over the past 20.  I'd love the FBI to get involved in this sham...or New York's attorney general.

In essence, by the NCAA saying they don't believe it was possible, they are indicating they don't trust Marcus nor SJU's integrity! NCAA stands for No Class At All!

So get a lawyer, prove the ncaa wrong and play this season.
Also sue those sack of shits for millions.

I agree.  If he did the proper work, get a lawyer and fight.  I'm going to be disappointed if they sit around and do nothing.

They have no choice but to sit around and do nothing. I'm not really sure what a lawyer is going to accomplish. The NCAA can rule whatever they want. If the NCCA rules a kid ineligible and a school plays that kid anyway they would face heavy sanctions that could destroy the program.

I'm not saying it's right because nothing the NCAA does is right, but that's what would happen.

St.John's has sadly already done plenty. They sent an empty threat to the NCAA.

So lets just say they continue fighting and eventually he gets cleared midseason. Does this really help the kid?

We don't know if they should fight it. All we know is that our head coach was angry enough to make a threat. So, IMO he is responsible for the anger towards the NCAA that St.John's fans are feeling. Either he spoke out of turn, or the NCAA has it in for St.John's.

Since Mullin didn't fly to Indiananapolis it seems fair to accept that he probably did speak out of turn, and the NCAA is well within their right to make LoVett a partial qualifier. As a head coach, he's going to have to learn to think before he speaks.
