Marillac - Had Lavin done what he was supposed to do on the recruiting front the past 2 years, we would not have such imbalance.  Competent staffs navigate these issues.

When we are struggling to win ten games in four years just remember the only voice of reason.

You are predicting this if LoVett plays this year? Just want to be sure so that when we are  competitive in 4 years we can come back to this.

You can't really say you believe in Mullin being successful here if you're saying by not redshirting one kid we are going to suck 4 years from now.

Time will prove Marillac right to make up for the Durand Johnson miss.

there are 13 schollies so replacing a 6 man class means we should have 7 good spread out in classes players returning and if the new class is a good one there is no reason we will not have continuity in a winning program. And that's not even counting any possible walk-on contributors you are oh so very very fond of.

If only that were true, Celtics.  If only that were true....

The reality is they won't be spread out.  Ponds will be a senior...there will be 1-2 true juniors...and the remaining 10 spots will be replaced in two years.  Essentially we are in a worse spot than this year.  We've proven this year that four seniors and a group of very talented freshmen can't win.  We've already proven that freshmen can't win many times...going back to Omar, Cuffe, Mo, Willie and co. and recently with Harkless, Sampson, Harrison, Pointer, and Greene.

If LoVett is cleared, not playing him is absurd.  He will be our point guard, and we've seen clearly that this team can't play without one.  Why the concern over one more kid in this class?  To be so worried about roster imbalance in four years makes no sense.  Hopefully, beginning next year. Mullin and staff recruit impact freshmen and JUCO's.  Ahmed, Freudenberg, and certainly Alkins will be able to contribute immediately.  We have the recruiters now who can fill 5 slots with big time D1 kids, and I doubt that Mussini plays 4 years here when a pro job in Italy is his for the asking.  I trust this staff to dig out of the hole they were left in, make us competitive quickly, and build something that will last.  Play LoVett as soon as he's cleared, continue to improve this year, and follow the plan that's been laid out.

Again,  is it worth it to lose a year of eligibility for a half season of games in a lost season?  The scholarship imbalance is already ridiculous with Yakwe playing. Do we really want to go through another 2 year rebuild in four years.  It's getting a little old.  This kid's height takes away the NBA as an option.

Sima, Owens, Yakwe, Ellison, Holifield, Mussini, and Lovett in one year?  A sacrifice has to be made somewhere to restore balance.

If we were 2 or 3 players away from a complete rebuild this season, why don't you believe that Mullin and his staff of super recruiters couldn't produce the same talent here in 4 years? This isn't Norm's massive desperation class of 10 players.

Awful Example about the Four Seniors this year. 2 of these guys are MAAC to A-10 talent at its best, Ron came from the MVC and Johnson was out all last year.  To say playing 4 seniors and talented freshman would not work again because of this year is crazy.....I do agree with you that i am sick of the cycle range every 4 years but i am very confident that our staff will add a transfer and Juco transfer each year to help balance out the scholarships

Give me Jucos then. Fine. There are plenty of them out there who aren't as terrible as Darien Williams. LoVett redshirts and the current team will wasted an important learning season. You can only learn so much without a point guard.

It's amazing that we still have not fully recovered from when Jarvis left this program as an absolute train wreck.  Lavin almost turned the corner but then Harkless and Dunlap left a year or two earlier then expected.  Then when they should have had a good year in 13-14, they came out playing like garbage in November, December, and the first half of January, thus preventing Lavin from recruiting any good players.  Why would you commit to a coach who was a good recruiter but was not a very good coach?  You wouldn't.  And now we are left with the same problem of unbalanced classes that Norm and Lav struggled with.

But really, right now, we need Lovett.  And badly.  You cannot let your program take on too much water, which it will if we can't get the ball past midcourt on national television.  This is serious.  We can't afford to look ridiculous on  TV with Seth Greenburgh in the studio being all too eager to knock us. Syracuse and SC might turn up the pressure on us and NJIT is a good team this year.  We still do not have any wings/forwards for next year.  If we look ridiculous this year, we might jeopardize the recruitment of good players for next year and beyond.  Plus we need to be good next year and so Lovett needs to log some minutes in games THIS YEAR. How good can you be with a Freshman at point guard?  So lets get him some work this year.

As far as the class balance goes, we have three years to address this.  In basketball, winning solves everything, and if you recruit two studs in one class and one the next, you've already solved most of your problems.  Have a couple of winning seasons and you enhance your ability to recruit.  Look ridiculous and you lose your ability to recruit.  This is what happened to Lavin.  You can't pretend that the lack of class balance does not exist, but the worst thing you can do is lose every conference game which we might if we don't get a PG.  We're paralyzed offensively right now.  It's serious when you make a Fordham look like the 82' Hoyas.  And we have four years to fill that ship.

Agree with some of your post Willie G, but plenty of teams have built programs and recruited well even after struggling for a few years.  Lavin's issue, recruiting wise, was not a lack of success.  Frankly, I think he became complacent, shooting very high for a few studs and then failing to have any second options when those guys committed elsewhere.  Perhaps recruits were scared off by the fact that they didn't think he could coach, but remember that we had basically a top class before we even started winning in 2010.  This staff will work their tail off - as long as kids and their parents/mentors/advisors believe that Mullin, Slice, Matt A, Rich, St. Jean etc can develop them as players and people, we will get our share.

Just to get any doubt out of my head .......

I'd rather see him play than sit out  (especially after seeing another game painfully watching us try to get the ball across mid court

He recruited well, but only in the beginning.  After it was revealed that he couldn't coach, he lost his ability to recruit. He hit the trail hard, knowing he's the kind of coach that needs great players to be competitive, but at some point point you have to put up some winning seasons.  By the time he had  a good year, it was too late.  He knew NY kids don't stay home so that's why he did not waste time in the city.  He had Carrington and Whitehead but then Willard broke the rules by bringing in Tiny, and thus also getting Carrington with IW.  Incidentally, this is how Willard has recruited well without winning.  He's cheated.

Syracuse is going absolutely destroy us on Sunday in front huge Syracuse crowd. Without Lovett we lose every conference game. I can't imagine any are close. All of them are in national tv. What person in their right mind would would send their child to a team like that when their plenty of stable programs.
Hopefully Lovett is here asap and he is a difference maker. Some face has to be saved this season . A few wins are better then no wins. A 12 point loss is better then a 40 point blowout.

Exactly right. If Mullin has a terrible inaugural season, a few homers on this board might happily forgive it and give him a free pass, but what will recruits say about us? Will they give us a free pass? If so, I'd love to know why in the world they would. As far as they know, we were an NCAA team and now we can't even compete with Fordham.

It always helps not to suck, but if we do For this season there is still a lot of things SJU can offer.
1. Ponds decided to stay home and play for SJU. That says he has faith in the program.
2. The kids may or may not understand the circumstances, but their coaches and handlers will. It seems that Mullin has made positive in roads with NYC coaches. This will help with players trusting that SJU is heading in the right direction.
3. We went to Maui this year and battle for Atlantis next year. Two highly respected tournaments, shows that SJU is relevant around the country...We did no lt creates the fatal error of losing to Chaminade.

There is still a lot to build off of if things go south, but if Lovett becomes eligible and the team is competitive and can steal a game, that will also make recruiting easier.

Excellent point, Poison.  Not having a true pg on the floor hinders the development on the rest of the guys (especially the freshmen) on e team.  Having a guy who can run the point will produce much better team ball and everyone's game will benefit.  Right now, every one of our opponents pressures us the entire game and force us to play helter skelter ball.

I think you missed that point entirely.  We cannot add a JUCO in 2017 or they will graduate with the current freshman class.  So JUCOs are completely out of the question for 2017.  Any JUCOs added in 2016 will be gone the year before this class freshman class graduates.
