One Time, One Year Pass

Can we all agree that Mullin and staff now get a complete pass for this season? 
There is one ball-handler on the roster this year and even he is only a freshman and not a pure PG.  There are only three returning players and none of them were in the main rotation at any point in their careers.  It's going to be ugly...even disgusting at times.  Being negative will do nothing but hurt the program and there are enough people outside the SJU community that will be doing that with the record this team will put up. 

If you include the players that will be eligible next year, 2016 is already shaping up to be one of the best recruiting classes the school has ever had.  Ponds is top 50, Lovett and Yakwe are top 100 with a year of experience under their belts, and Owens will have two years of experience under his belt, and the staff is looking good with Ahmed and Freudenberg, two NBA talents. 

I think a few years down the road we will all be really thankful two have two 5th-year seniors in Lovett and Yakwe playing in a meaningful season instead of wasting a year of eligibility to add a few wins to a team with no chance at the postseason. 

This is probably a good time to remind everyone that the #10 prospect in 2018, 6'11 Bol Bol, will be a soph the year Lovett, Ponds, and Yakwe are seniors.  His late father, Manute Bol, named his brother after Chris Mullin.  Manute and Chris were very close and Chris offered Bol Bol a scholarship right after taking the job.

Every college coach should get at least a one year pass from the fan base. But that doesn't mean everyone isn't entitled to look for clear improvement. Expectations are so low now, that if Mullin wins 5 games all year, he will have met them.

It's more important for the program that he establishes his coaching system so that recruits can understand what they are being recruited to be a part of. Make a scrub into a serviceable player. No one is expecting Balamou to be All BE, but he's a senior, and he's a hard worker. I want to see Mullin and the staff save that kid's basketball career. Turn him into a 10 ppg, 5 rebound, 2 steal glue guy.

Get them playing defense like a Big East team. Get them to play like a NYC basketball team should. As long as they fight, they hustle and they improve, I don't think anyone would not see a bright future.

Rare for me to be able to say great posts by both Marillac and Poison at the same time (and the latter shocks me).  Mullin DOES deserve a pass in terms of W/L, as long as, Poison is absolutely right, improvement in the players, coaches, team occurs and that they play like a NYC basketball team should.  With Mullin and our staff, the latter is not something I am at all concerned about.

No St. John's fan wants to see Mullin do poorly. All of us expect a tough season. Winning 4 conference games would be tough. But understandable. Being non competive in every game won't be for me. I was only at the St. Thomas game . It absolutely left a bad taste in my mouth. It was that bad. I want Mullin to do well and I will support him. However losing to Wagner and Baltimore county would be awful. Going winless in conference would be awful. Mullin and his staff are being paid well. They have a hard job. But they have to produce something.

The team looked bad in both exhibitions but with how talented this staff is we will see huge improvement over the next couple months. It's hard to simulate a real game in practice. This was the first time these guys ever played together in a rea game, it was going to be messy. I along with all of you am just looking for improvement. Wins and losses will not be the way to judge the success of this team. I just hope we can squeeze out a few good wins so the guys see that they are progressing. Double digit wins would be nice but that might not happen and if it doesn't then oh well. I'm excited for a new season and even more excited to see Lovett, Yakwe, Owens, Ponds and more joining the roster next season.

We can look forward to awful losses.  We had one already with STAC.  On one level, we are giving Mullin a free ride because we all like him enough to want him to succeed.  He's a freshman as a coach.  He's a workaholic.  The future looks good. 

Agree that season's success will not be based on number of wins or lack thereof.  Rather I'll be looking at player development throughout the season and the amount of effort put forth by the players.

I can't help but wonder how much Briscoe would have been helped or hurt re: NBA draft stock if he was the general of our team this year.  Obviously can't even begin to hypothecize because maybe Lavin never leaves if he has Briscoe and Sampson signed, but gotta wonder if Kentucky was the right place for this kid.  Think Dave brought this up all along.

No.  I don't agree.  I've said it before and I'll say it again - This coach deserves a LIFETIME pass from all of us. It's CHRIS MULLIN for g*ds sake.

If Babe Ruth came back to coach the Yankees; or Willis Reed to the Knicks; or Joe Namath to the Jets; or Bryan Trottier to the Islanders I would expect the same and nothing less.

I don't know Marcus at all so can't say what his intentions maybe but when I heard he was ineligible had concerns whether he was going to stay committed to the program. Its more because of being burned in the past and less about Marcus.

The staff has to develop what we have and we need to get better each game. More importantly learn from the silly mistakes we are making as a team. If we do that long term we will be better as a team. This will also set us up for next year.

Because if he left now he wouldn't have to just sit out this year but next year too. With his age his NCAA clock is ticking and that would be very foolish.

I'd give Mullin a pass on the W-L record. He came here with a totally depleted roster, the NCAA eligibility issues (Lovett, Yawke, Felix), and only having a summer to recruit.

That said, I will be judging Mullin based on how prepared our team is, the in-game coaching (expecting a bit of a learning curve), our recruits for next season, and the development of our roster from yesterday to March. We've got guys with a lot of upside, and it'd be great to see people really improve toward the end of the season.

We can be really good next year with people improving, our guys becoming fully eligible (+ Tariq), and one big recruit.

Also seems like Lovett is a guy who doesn't have the prototypical NBA body that would inspire him to declare for the draft without really accomplishing something in college.

last years starters were good players. But, CO and Sheed had bad attitudes and there was no depth.
