The coaching staff is stealing money.  Mullin sits on the scores table and the other guys sit there quietly while these kids are out there struggling . What would people be saying if Roberts or Lavin behaved like this. Unacceptable
Agree! Coaching is hard tough job. Gary Williams used to sweat through multiple shirts and suits. I am sure they do care. But they seem to take losing easy. Maybe you don't yell at an NBA vet . But you certainly get on a college freshman.

With that Sam Gilbert backed payroll he did not have much to get worked up about. :)

Please.  Fred Hoiberg hardly broke a sweat in 5 years coaching Iowa St.  And he did pretty good.  I've sat behind the bench at certain games where Mullin and other members of the staff besides St. Jean are animated.  Don't even respond to that agenda spewing troll who started this whole issue.  His boy Lavin is the reason our roster construction is a disaster right now.

Johnson could have taken a charge there, but he decided to just let the guy score.

To say that Mullin and the staff are stealing money because they don't get all worked up on the sidelines is ridiculous. There are different styles of coaching, some coaches scream and go crazy and some are more laid back. Doesn't mean that they care more or less about their jobs. Mullin and his staff have been working hard by all accounts so I let him sitting on the scorers table go because it is meaningless.

I have been negative. I don't want to be. I expected more. I certainly don't want to keep bashing Mullin and staff. But they should have been better over the weekend. The team looked better last night . I only saw the first half. But their has to be some fire and some urgency.
i also have sat behind the bench multiple times. I have seen enough awful basketball where someone should have lost their temper, where someone should have called someone out. Players make mistakes. The coaches job is to correct it. I imagine most of you guys played sports I also assume that you had coaches that would let you have it at times.
The team had been flat way to much. Part of that is on the staff. Intensity has to be raised.
About being impatient, last year we were 18th in the country at this time. I was not in favor of starting completely over. I thought it was stupid then and I think less of it now. I well aware of the teams talent level. I give no St. John's coach a pass to play like we have this year. I would hope Mullin doesn't want one. Like everyone o was happy when he was hired. I am less confident now then I was before the season. I am not as impressed with anyone on the team as most of you. I think sima is good. And will be really good. Besides that I think everything is questionable .
I don't love the offensive system. I think good shooters should have the green light at all times . Not everyone. Amar has hit some lately. He also threw up a bunch of bricks.
Johnson shoots when ever where ever he wants. Mussini is an excellent shooter like Harrison freshman and sophomore years he should shoot whenever. But just him.
The defense has been terrible. Adjustments and zones haven't come. This staff should have been able to figure out a better way to stop NJIT and incarnate wood. Those teams are not awful. But we are bigger, better, faster, stronger.  I question did we have a game plan? If we did it wasn't followed. After incarnate woods PF hit his 4th 3. Coach could have called timeout. Called out the player agreessively. Maybe after a time out the guy wouldn't have hit his 5th.
Next year we should be better, but by how much? Do we play Fordham close? Disappointing seasons suck but this is awful. I don't have blind faith. I only know what I see with my own eyes. I am not confident in the future not because I want to bash someone. Just that is what I see. I am sure before every game the other team notices Mullin and Richmond . Once the game starts all that goes out the window. Coaching is hard not easy . I have coached at hs and lower level. As a coach I absolutely believe that I affected  a game with my words and excitement. I believe that I got stops with my passion. I don't see that with this staff. I hope next year we look like a basketball team and I remembered as being crazy.

I recall two specific moments in both Incarnate and NJ where we just made one bonehead mistake after another. But it just kept on going. By the time we called a TO, we were breaking up a 14-0 run, instead of a 7-0 run.

These fan expectations are ridiculous.  We have half of a team and the half we have are all freshmen.  We are a long way away from a complete team that will be competitive every night at this level.  Our freshmen are fantastic but raw and need experience.  We also simply need more talent, including a PG who is still sitting out amongst others.  It isn't all going to come together this season.  Boneheaded plays are going to be made and it's very hard to learn those things in the midst of a game.  Those things take time.  I can't believe some of the people on this board,  we have half the talent of other teams and are amazingly young.  I don't know what people are expecting??

CJ quietly continues to impress, his improvement is the best surprise of the season. His post game, agility around the perimeter and jumper have really come along. I can't be happier for him, he's going to wind up having a very respectable career by the end of next year, and I know there's only so many people that thought that. Sima and Moose both are admirably doing their best, their time will come. Yakwe is going to be stud, we can all see it.

Very respectable and will be a big reason for our success next season.  Our frontcourt will be ready from the jump next season.

Spoken like a real coach TonyD3.

It's not spoken like a real coach.  It's spoken like an unrealistic fan who expects a team that came together in its entirety in a few months to be seasoned and not making lots of mistakes.  The mistakes of a team that is mostly freshmen and transfers can't be corrected during game time.  It takes lots of film and learning good habits.  We have the luxury of none of that as these guys just met each other in September.  When we have a year or two of class stratification and additional talent, you'll be much better able to see what's going on.  This season, expect plenty more of this.  It is expected with the limited talent, roster and multiple freshmen starting.

Exactly - Lavin - who is the primary culprit for our season.  As I said earlier, we should all just ignore the agenda-filled trash spewed from this guy.

Coaching is hard not easy .

Coaching is not hard. If it was there would be fewer stupid coaches. The truth is that many people involved in sports at a high level are mouth breathers: between being coddled academically and repeatedly concussed it's a wonder some of these guys can even tie their shoes. Neurosurgery is hard. Piloting the space shuttle is hard. Being a Navy seal is hard. Coaching is only hard if you're a nice person and if you're a nice person everything is hard.

As a coach I absolutely believe that I affected  a game with my words and excitement. I believe that I got stops with my passion. I don't see that with this staff.

I have some questions about your post and it's not about how you managed to cram the word "I" into a 500 word essay 36 times - which is an impressive 7 percent. It's about what's cited above

"I absolutely believe that I affected  a game with my words and excitement. I believe that I got stops with my passion."

I certainly agree that there are coaches who inspire their players with their passion, eg Billy Martin. And otoh there are also very successful coaches who are stoics, eg John Wooden or Gregg Popovich. And then there are coaches who are passionate and jump up and down and don't do very well at all. Steve Lavin for example was quite the dervish on the sidelines and he sucked balls at coaching and his teams stunk. So there does not seem to be any direct correlation between success and passion that I can see, and especially because I assume that all - or at least most - coaches are passionate about winning. I say most because Steve Lavin famously said that he "didn't feel any great pressure to win at Saint John's" but he's probably an anomaly: I think we can agree that most coaches probably care more about winning than they do about what kind of pasta they're going to shove into their mouths after the game. So anyway digression aside and getting back to your beliefs:

* Are there other areas in your life where your words and excitement can affect outward reality. Like if you're in traffic and you yell at the other cars do they part like the Red Sea before Moses. Or if you yell at water does it boil faster. This may sound frivolous, but Uri Geller thinks he can bend spoons by talking to them and Madame Blavatsky thought her words capable of raising the dead. I just want to know what I'm dealing with.

* You say that your team makes good plays because of your words. When your team makes a bad play, is that because you're not excited and passionate enough? Or is that he kids fault. If your team makes a bad play because you're not excited an passionate enough, do you yell at yourself to bring yourself to the right level of excitement and passion so that when you yell at the kids their play improves, or do you just continue to yell at them.

* Are there specific words or inflections that you use to inspire your team or is it all improvised? Which is more important, the words or the passion? Like if you yelled really excited gibberish would that work or would a flat effect work with Gettysburg Address level inspiring rhetoric like "Come on guys get a stop" or "Hey Little Johnnie make your free throws" or is it a specific combination of inflection and syllables that works the magic?

* If your sideline passion is responsible for good outcomes, do you practice screaming and jumping up and down? If not, aren't you doing a disservice to your players? Wouldn't yelling practice be more effective than lay up drills and so on.

* When you yell things that make your players play better how come the sound only affects your players and not the other team? Like if you farted, everyone would smell it, not just the shirts or the skins. How come everyone who hears your inspiring words isn't inspired?

* Why is it that some coaches who yell all the time - Mike Rice for example - don't win all the their games. Is it because they're not yelling the right things loud enough or is it that the other guy is yelling more better things louder? Why was Bobby Knight's passionate yelling so effective at Indiana and so much less effective at Texas Tech.

* If Mullin's stoicism is responsible for the losses to IW and NJIT, how did SJU manage to beat Syracuse in the face of that same stoicism?
