Considering all the vitriol aimed at him, real disappointing showing for Lavin . Program's 2nd most successful coach the runaway winner

I could only vote once.

So if you could go back in time to prevent only one of them from existing it would be Lavin and not Jarvis?

Jarvis and it's not even close. Entitled, obstinant and complacent.

Yet, players improved on his watch, and the team competed. He lost his way towards the end, but he was not responsible for what happened to our program. That honor belongs to another person.

Towards the end? He was cocky from Day 1. He was too complacent to want to build relationships with the HS coaches in the city. He was handed the keys to a very nice car when he took over what Fran had already laid the groundwork for. He left it a complete scrap heap by the end.

No. But the wounds are fresher. I'm pretty good at holding a grudge but all I feel for Jarhead now is pity and contempt. Whereas I actively despise Lavin.

If the question was "who could I prevent from ever having been coach" my answer would be Norm without hesitation.  Fran would probably be last.  But I "hate" Fran the most (I dont hate fran or any of them, just frustrated by him) because of everyone I think he is the one who could have taken us to a level of sustained success but due to his own failures and shortcomings, he didnt and couldnt.  More of a what could have been regret than a hatred.

Yes if you weigh the good against the bad the only answer would be Norm

But for Jarvis there would have been no Norm.

Would be an interesting butterfly effect. Believe me I know that Jarvis was not a good coach but do you think if Fran had not dropped trou that team would have been as good with him? I know from a very good source the players pretty much hated Fran.
Or do you mean if someone other than Jarvis was hired? I do not recall other candidates though Hewitt's name was always popping up

I mean that if various scandals had not followed in wake of the Jarvae, Harrington would not have hired an inexperienced choir boy to clean up his mess. Because at that point basketball was not the administration's priority, avoiding bad publicity was.

Yeah but if you take Jarvis out of the equation, Elite 8 team would not have happened. Only reason I don't hate on Jarvis like everyone else is I really liked the Elite team. Might be my favorite team and despite what happened afterwards I would not give that team up.

Considering all the vitriol aimed at him, real disappointing showing for Lavin .

Not surprising.  Most level headed board members can see the numbers and come to a reasonable conclusion concerning Hollywood.

It's the main anti-Lavin protagonist being so loud that gives the appearance that he's widely despised when in fact, he's not.  Your poll proves it.

+1

I believe there was a similar poll on Redmen from a year ago, and it also proved Lavin wasn't widely despised.

I think many hate Lavin. Just because he isn't the most hated doesn't mean he isn't hated.

Fran is the only one that I didn't particularly like while he was our coach, I rrespective of W-L record.  Still, no hatred for any of them.

Jarvis led teams were the most fun I've had being a St Johns fan in 18 years.

I think Fran would've won just as much with those teams as Jarvis did.

Jarvis then Norm but I don't hate any of them anymore. Lavin's 1st year when we beat down all those teams that spent years beating us down diminished my anger greatly

I guess if I was going to blame anyone now it would be Fr Harrington

So I see.
The players could've hated his guts, and I only met him when I was young, but I think Fran was a good basketball mind and coach.  He knew the game well.
Teams win with aggressive a rear of a donkey coaches all the time.

I liked Fran as a coach and thought  he was going to be long term answer.  If he had success he would have looked to leave and sooner rather than later Artest was going to strangle him so that would not have ended well.
