I think the best defensive player in BE history. Certainly none better. Comments ?

The best defensive player in BE history is Patrick Ewing.
Remember Gene Smith from that GTown team. He was born to play the D.  (Although Pearl abused him.)

Baldi I thought you didn't like Amar as a player -- or just that he is not a Big East caliber player but could play in the MAAC???

Per Rothstein;
St. John's transfer Amar Alibegovic is receiving interest from Colorado, Boise State, Montana, Iona, and UIC, sources told @CBSSports

1 year off working with top notch staff at IONA....

Actually I don't.  But then again, my memory could be best described as "foggy".

I do recall that as a unit there D was elite.

Ok but I'm talking inch for inch. Easier to play defense when you are physically superior. But Linehan was a smallish, short pest. No one had better defensive instincts then he.

Like I said, 1 year off working with a staff who knows how to use him. Could do well in the Maac

So this staff doesn't know how to coach either?

I don't agree with that

Baldi I could see Amar doing well in the MAAC because he has size, is tough, can shoot it a bit, and has the desire to be a good player (from what I've read).  Has trouble guarding, rebounding or getting his shot against the bigger, more athletic guys he would see in the Big East.  In the MAAC, as you know, it is a different ball game.  So while yes I think Cluess would know how to use a guy with his skill-set, I don't think his lack of success at SJU is due to our current staff not knowing how to utilize a player with his skill set.  I think Amar is bit out of his league against Big East comp.

Jones, IMO, would be an even better get.  I think he could do major damage against MAAC front lines, and his defensive issues would be masked much more, as Dave pointed out in another thread.

I agree. Sometimes the player is what he is. While we have no evidence that the staff can develop talent, Jones has been here for 4 years, and he plays terrible defends. Alibegovic has horrible footwork. I would have liked to see the staff work with him on that, but it never improved. That's why he had so much trouble inside. He had no balance, and therefore no ability to go up strong. Neither will learn defense at Iona, but if they plan to play in Europe anyway after college it doesn't really matter much because of their girly watered down version of the game.

I don't remember Harrington as being in the class as Ewing, Mourning and Dikembe on the defensive end.  I do remember one game at MSG when jarvii put Cujo on him and he actually blocked a shot or two, took away his inside game and scored down low against him.

Harrington was drafted in 96. Way before Curtis Johnson was at SJU

I was saying to myself, "WTH is Section 9 talking about?  Harrington was long gone before Jarvis or CuJo came to St. John's."

I loved Linehan.  I recall a game during the 2001-2002 season where he was dogging our guards so bad in the backcourt that Jarvis decided to have Cuffe and, I believe King, bring the ball up the floor.  They ended up beating us in OT that particular game.

Linehan was notorious for beating players to the spot and either getting a steal or creating an offensive foul.  A supreme pest and defensive dynamo.

I think he's probably remembering CUJO when we played Notre Dame at MSG and CUJO gave Ryan Humphrey fits with his size.

Gotcha, but who was the big a gtown at the time?  Cujo got into the game and had an impact.
