With more than three months still left to go until the 2011-2012 season gets underway, the Red Storm schedule is continuing to take shape.
The Big East released its slate of conference games Thursday, and this young St. John’s squad is beginning to see what they will be up against, including home-home series with Georgetown, DePaul, and Cincinnati.
In this 18-game Big East schedule, the Red Storm will take on twelve teams once and the three above teams twice.
Among the in-conference home games for St. John’s will be Louisville, Syracuse, and Notre Dame, along with Villanova and Providence. The Red Storm will go on the road to take on Pitt, Marquette, South Florida, and defending national champion Connecticut.
“This coming season our team will face the most challenging schedule of my coaching career,” said head coach Steve Lavin in a press release. “In addition to the always-competitive Big East slate, we also will be playing a rigorous non-conference schedule highlighted by matchups against Kentucky, Duke, Detroit and UCLA. Our young squad will benefit from being tested with one of the toughest schedules in St. John’s history.”
With the impressive season the conference had this past year, 91% of the total number of games played in-conference will feature at least one team from the NCAA Tournament last year. Of that, 47% will feature two teams from the Tournament.
St. John’s finished 12-6 in the Big East last season, making their first NCAA appearance since 2002. The Red Storm will be returning just one scholarship letterwinner in junior point guard Malik Stith.
