At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, water is boiling and with boiling water, comes steam and with steam, you can power a train. At the 212 Hoops Academy up in Dobbs Ferry, New York, former assistant coach of St. Johns University, Fred Quartlebaum is providing kids from second grade all the way to high school with the steam they need to power their train in life.
A lot of times people look at sports and say that it’s just a game. What they don’t understand is that sports, and in this case basketball, is not just a game for those who play it or instruct it like Coach Q, but it’s a way to learn life skills.
“My son True is coming to the age where he’s not playing basketball games anymore but is getting into the gym to play basketball.” Said Steve Budihas, who’s son is apart of the 212 Hoops Academy, “Coach Q helps him grow up, gives him that next level experience.”
Coach Q doesn’t want to just teach how to power step to the hoop or make the smart play. He wants to institute to them that making that smart play on the court can help you make the smart play in life.
“I feel this is my opportunity to share ideas that I learned from Norm Roberts, Wayne Morgan and others. Teach them about basketball but also about the team work and life skills they need everyday,” said Coach Q.
I visited Coach Q at Kenneth B. Clark Academy thinking I would be a witness to kids learning the fundamentals about basketball and that’s about it. I was wrong.
“I came here looking to improve my footwork and my game hoping when I graduate I can take my game to the next level in college somewhere,” said Brandon Horsford, 18, “but I’m also learning good sportsmanship. When I was younger I didn’t have very good sportsmanship but Coach Q helped me grow up and mature.”
Horsford also added, “[Coach Q] always has a positive attitude. I ask him how does he do it and he just says by doing the right thing always keep him in a positive attitude. He’s like my guidance counselor.”
Coach Q continually expressed wanting to help the community out. Bring kids from all parts, where from in the academy itself or in the neighboring areas together.
“It’s really about them,” Coach Q said, “It’s about the community and me helping them out.”
Coach Q all around is a great guy and a leading example of how one man can take a sport and bring a community together with one ball.
We here at JohnnyJungle.com wish him the best of luck to Coach Q and the rest of the 212 Basketball Academy community.
