Johnny Jungle.com got a chance to catch up with St. John’s Basketball Alumnus Otoja Abit to see what he was up to. “Toe” played for St. John’s from 2004-2008.
JJ: What have you been up to post graduation? Work? Socially?
OA: Since Commencing from St. John’s I’ve been pursuing a career as working Actor/Model. The day I left the campus I have been doing that full time. I’m following a dream and couldn’t be any happier.
JJ: Where are you currently residing?
OA: I currently reside in Briarwood. It’s good for me because I live close to the St.John’s Community and also Archbishop Molloy HS (my HS alma mater)
JJ: What was the life of being a walk on for the basketball team like?
OA: To me the life of being a walk on the basketball team was just the same as being a scholarship player. I viewed us all as being equal and never looked at myself different than Eugene Lawrence or Lamont Hamilton. Maybe they may have played more than me… but I was prepared every game and practice for war and to do what’s best for the team.
JJ: Favorite Norm Roberts quote?
OA: My favorite Norm Robert’s quote is “You guys don’t really realize how good you have it here”.
JJ: Best memory from your time spent on the team?
OA: My best memory from my time spent on the team is definitely winning two championships at THE HOLIDAY FESTIVAL. Also, facing other teams and only being able to trust the 20 or so people in that huddle. It always brought us all closer.
JJ: Have you watched any games this season? If so any advice for the team?
OA: I’ve been at 85% of the games at Carneseecca Arena. I’ve watched all the games that are televised as well. My advice to the team is to keep going hard and leaving everything on the floor. Also, to trust what Coach Roberts is saying. He’s a proven winner and leader and following him is the best way that I know for us to do right. Every time I watch them, I am very proud because the current Juniors were freshman when I was a senior. They’ve all matured and grown as players/men and I couldn’t be any prouder
JJ: How did you get into acting? Why?
OA: I got into acting by always having a lpassion for it always. Being a Division-1 athlete was difficult to pursue this craft because of the devotion I had to the program. When I graduated I just took all the qualities I’ve learned at St.J and decided to pursue a dream. I initially spoke with Donald Taffner and he helped me with a BLUEPRINT for what I should be doing in my career. So for the past two years I’ve been finding gigs here and there and modeling to keep my head afloat.
JJ: Anything you can tell us about your new reality TV show?
OA: SEDUCING CINDY is a fox reality channel original. I’m excited to be a part of a great cast and I had an experience of a lifetime. Out of 3,000 people I was 1 of 25 who was cast. A great accomplishment in my career. This show is going to be entertaining and also will make some noise in this industry. TUNE AND WATCH AND SUPPORT!!
I’m just grateful for all the people I’ve met and known while being on that team. I noticed being on the most watched team on campus could be scary. I used it to my advantage and met tons of people. Now in this business where it’s who you know. I hope I started my networking in school..right. Johnny Jungle you do a great thing and keep it coming!
