He may only be a sophomore, but Nate Britt is already drawing national attention.
This past weekend at the Hoop Group Pittsburgh Jam Fest, Britt showed his raw talent and what can become of him in the open court at an up-tempo pace.
St. John’s fans know a lot about up-tempo, so when you hear a recruit mention it, everyone begins to think if he is a possible candidate for the Johnnies.
Nate Britt has thoughts about St. John’s, too.
“St. John’s is somewhere I’d like to go to” said Britt this past weekend at Hoop Group Pittsburgh Jam Fest. “I really like what they are doing up there.”
Britt will be entering his junior year at Gonzaga College High School (DC) and is a member of the Class of 2013. ESPN has him ranked at 35th overall in the class, but St. John’s fans should have him in their top two, along with DeMatha (MD) forward Beejay Anya.
The 6’2” left-handed guard can do it all. He has the ability to run a fast pace game, as well as slow it up and play in the half-court. He has great vision, which he showed with his AAU team, DC Assault. On the fastbreak, he threaded the needle with a pass through the seam of two defenders legs and got it to teammate Torian Graham for a two-handed finish. Getting to the basket isn’t a problem and his mid-range jumper is as solid as solid can be. The part he has to work on is his strength and outside shot, which he admitted was one place he wanted to work on.
“I think I do everything pretty well. I just have to work on my three-point shot,” Britt said.
Point blank, the kid is a point guard, if you’ve ever seen one.
He has multiple offers already from big time programs such as Duke, Pittsburgh, and Georgetown. The team that will get him, he said, will be the team with the right coach, someone he can feel a “partnership” with.
St. John’s hasn’t been mentioned as a team looking to recruit, but knowing Steve Lavin and his methods, no recruit isn’t being looked at as he continues his path toward rebuilding St. John’s a pedestal in college basketball.
Britt averaged 13.5 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals per game as a sophomore at Gonzaga. He was the 2011 Gatorade Player of the Year in Washington D.C. and, step by step, is making himself known in the high school and college basketball world, as well as in the eyes of the St. John’s faithful.
