The St. John’s Red Storm season has been extended and will head down to Philadelphia to take on St. Joseph’s in a first round NIT game. The Red Storm have lost seven of their last eight games including their only game in the Big East tournament. The Red Storm tripped to the finish line after losing their leading scorer D’Angelo Harrison to a team leveled suspension.
This will be the 28th all-time appearance in the NIT for St. John’s. The last time the Red Storm appeared was in 2010 when Memphis won at home 73-71 on a buzzer beater in the final game Norm Roberts would coach at St. John’s.
St. Joe’s and St. John’s have played 55 times in the past with the Red Storm holding a 43-12 edge in the season series. The game will mark the fourth meeting between the schools at St. Joe’s and the first since the 1927-28 season. The last time these two teams met up was a 72-55 win for the Johnnies on January 14th 1980 at Carnesecca Arena.

St. Joseph’s Hawks (18-13, 8-8)
Head Coach: Phil Martelli
As a #4 seed the Hawks and Phil Martelli will be looking to play their type of ball and oust the Johnnies. The Hawks were a formidable team in the Atlantic 10 this year and had some good players that will be hard to keep up with. Their starting backcourt of Carl Jones and Chris Wilson are good scorers. Jones is averaging 14 points per game on 39% shooting from the field. Jones scored 29 points on 8-16 shooting against VCU in an Atlantic 10 tournament loss. Wilson shoots it at 38% from the field and is averaging 6.9 points per game.
The real test for the Johnnies will be containing former commit Ron Roberts. Roberts who was committed to Norm Roberts and the Johnnies was let go of his commitment when Steve Lavin was hired. The junior forward Roberts is averaging a career high 11.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for the Hawks. Big man CJ Aiken is also someone to look out for in the front court averaging 10.8 points and and 5.4 rebounds.
Projected Starting Lineup:
F Ron Roberts
F Halil Kanacevic
G Langston Galloway
G Chris Wilson
G Carl Jones
St. John’s (16-15, 8-10)
Head Coach: Steve Lavin
The Johnnies have had some close calls against some good teams during this losing stretch. Taking Marquette to overtime and losing on a buzzer beater and playing tough in the Big East tournament against Villanova. But this team will look to gain focus and try and make a postseason run before the final curtain for the 2012-13 season hits.
Someone who has stepped up the past two games for the Red Storm is Phil Greene. Greene scored 16 points on 7-19 shooting against Villanova and 20 points on 9-15 shooting against Marquette. Greene is averaging 9.8 points per game on the season on 36% shooting. The sophomore guard is shooting 36% from the field but is shooting a ghastly 23% from behind the arc.
The most important player for the Red Storm will be freshman and Big East Rookie of the Year JaKarr Sampson. Sampson had a poor game against Villanova shooting 5-18 from the field and netting 13 points and grabbing nine rebounds. The freshman has been thrust into the role of the best player on the team and will need to be if the Johnnies want any chance at advancing in the NIT.
Projected Starting Lineup:
F JaKarr Sampson
F Sir’Dominic Pointer
F Chris Obekpa
G Phil Greene
G Jamal Branch
Keys to Victory
• Clamp on Jones- The Johnnies will not be able to afford a 29+ point performance from Carl Jones in round one and the guards must be up to the challenge of defending. Branch, Greene and co. must be able to get in front of Jones and take away the driving lanes and get in his face on jumpshots. It will be key to see this team come out with fire and intent on winning the tournament.
• Want it- There is no shame in playing in or winning the NIT. Everybody wants to go to the NCAA Tournament but those 32 teams selected to the NIT are all good teams. The NIT adds experience and helps team gel together. If this Johnnies team wants to win and comes out hungry it could make a deep run.
• Bench Play– Steve Lavin has been playing with some interesting combinations off the bench including playing some walk ons early in games. This has lead to less than great results but Lavin will continue to give out bench minutes and whoever gets them will need to contribute. That includes Marc-Antoine Bourgault who could be a lethal shooter off the bench when he’s on and Christian Jones, the freshman forward who had a breakout game against Marquette. And of course Amir Garrett who is a glue guy and can stuff the stat sheet on his best days.
• A Healthy Olive Branch- Sophomore guard Jamal Branch hasn’t been 100% healthy since retiring on February 24th against Pittsburgh. Branch sprained his MCL againsT Georgetown on February 2nd and missed four games. A healthy Branch could be a difference maker as his ability to pass and score if he can become explosive are what this team has been missing. Branch practiced without his knee brace for the first time yesterday.
Final Prediction: St. John’s Wins, 60-54
