It seemed like all hope was lost for St. John’s and they were going to struggle sizing up for another year in the Big East but Wait! Phil Wait that is. Ok so maybe isn’t as smooth as Bond James Bond but Wait should provide the Johnnies with rebounding and presence as a starter or backup pending on the development Sophomore Dele Coker. At the very least Wait’s size alone should help out the Storm who were abused in the paint being so modest in size compared to most Big East teams.
Phil Wait was playing with the Gran Canaria Academy in Spain along side Ashley Hamilton the 6’8 swing who we found out shortly after the Larry Wright saga that we were courting his services and we stumbled upon the big feller. Wait who was considered by most a project worth taking two seasons ago has developed into a solid player for his size and offers more athleticism than most would think striking the interest of schools such as Nebraska, Kentucky, Arizona St. and the Loveless UCLA Bruins.
Phil is a big fan of soccer and is no stranger to getting on the pitch himself which could only mean good things for his footwork on the court. He is known for having solid hands and altering as well as blocking shots. We aren’t making Wait out to be Luke Harangody or Hasheem Thabeet however he should pose a threat to slow those type of players down and hopefully provide a counter punch to keep teams honest with Justin Burrell on the offensive end.
We’ll see if he is a potential diamond in the rough or another below average big who is worth 5 fouls per contest. The bottom line St. John’s fans have to be slightly happy landing a big man with this size this late in the signing season. St. John’s goes from Eugene Lawrence, Larry Wright, and Mike Cavataio to Quincy Roberts, Tyshwan Edmondson, and Phil Wait. In my eyes its almost upgrade by default and I’m not complaining one bit about taking any steps even if baby in the right direction and I can’t wait to start the “Filthy Phil” chants again which died with the graduation of former walk on Phil Messere.
