This upcoming season is most likely the “make or break” season for Norm Roberts and St. John’s basketball.
Roberts’ job may very well be on the line if he can’t show significant improvement for a team that finished 14th in the Big East last season.
With that said, Roberts is faced with the problem of having an open 2008 scholarship this late in the recruiting process.
The Johnnie’s have already inked 7-foot-1 center Phil Wait, 6-foot-4 guard Tyshwan Edmondson and 6-foot-5 guard Quincy Roberts for the 2008 recruiting class. Add the three incoming players to the nine returning scholarship players and you have 12 scholarship players for the 2008 season.
The NCAA permits each team to carry a maximum of 13 scholarship players. That means that the Red Storm have one left for the 2008 class and are faced with options. They could either add another player or carry the scholarship over to 2009 along with graduating seniors Anthony Mason Jr. and Tomas Jasiulionis leaving two more scholarships open.
