Mod Note: note that Tharpe decommitted when Providence assistant Pat Skerry left the school for Pitt, so he may give a hard look there.

T.J. Gassnola, head of the New England Playaz, said in a phone interview near midnight Wednesday that he had heard from numerous schools “in the last six hours.”

“Miami, St. John’s, Rutgers, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech contacted me in the last six hours,” he said.

Asked if Pitt was now an option, Gassnola said, “Could be. Providence is still an option, though.

Well everyone says we need a pg this kid looks like he is a player. It will be interesting to see how his recruitment plays out.  A lot of big name schools will be after him

He's definitely a player. He's capable of being the starting point on a NCAA Tournament team. Way above the dregs that have been playing the position at STJ since Calhoun left. Not necessarily spectacular, but a very solid player. It's a major blow to Providence.

http://www.zagsblog.com/2010/08/02/naadir-tharpe-waiting-to-cut-list/

After a long July on the recruiting circuit with the New England Playaz, Naadir Tharpe has a list of schools in mind but plans to wait until he gets back to Brewster (N.H.) Academy to cut his list.

“I don’t have any top schools,” Tharpe, who previously decommitted from Providence, said Monday morning. “I’m basically looking at everybody until I get back to school and talk to my coach [Jason Smith] about what schools fit me the best.”

The 6-foot, 170-pound Tharpe listed St. John’s, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Minnesota, Iowa State, Marquette, Providence and Oklahoma.

“The only school that hasn’t offered is Oklahoma,” he said.

Tharpe said he models his game after Deron Williams, Chris Paul and Kobe Bryant and hopes to bring leadership and a winning attitude wherever he lands.

“Basically I want to be a leader,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what team you play on, your point guard is supposed to be the leader of your team. I’m gonna try to bring leadership, as well as winning.”

Playing time is important, too. So schools like Rutgers and St. John’s that can offer immediate PT in the backcourt are in good shape.

“Those schools don’t have any guards,” he said. “They’re definitely high on my list.”

Someone should tell him that all St. John's will have then are guards.... but still, didn't know Lavin was recruiting him.

Tharpe also played well over the summer.  So, maybe his stock has risen a bit over the past couple of months.

It has, but he choked big-time at the Adidas Super 64.
Compton Magic had a one point lead and Naadir got phantom call with 0.4 seconds remaining and 2 fts. The Compton  crowd was going nuts over potentially losing on that call. Naadir steps to the line alone.
He missed both free throws and thus eliminated NE Playaz from the Super 64. The whole team was distraught afterwards.

Goodman is very tight w/ Gassnola, who runs the NE Playaz and told the  Boston Globe that he'd take a bullet for Calipari.

No offense to guys like Boothe or even Eugene Lawerence, but Naadir, who is already 19, is a NCAA Tournament caliber scoring pg. Some think his shot selection isn't always stellar and he doesn't have great size (usually a listed 5'11"). There are better pgs out there, but I think he'd be a good four-year college pg for a program like STJ.

Now that Mack has comitted to Rutgers, I wonder if he still visits RU tomorrow ?
Do we know if he has narrowed his list ?

Tharpe in no rush

http://www.nehoopnews.com/news/1022/Tharpe-in-no-rush.php

Rutgers had just received a verbal commitment from Myles Mack out of New Jersey,
and Tharpe would no longer be a target for the Scarlet Knights

"I want to wait until after the season to make my decision.  I don't want to rush into anything,"

Nice current write up- sounds like he might wait till spring.

Per Alex Kline....  "St. John's commit Maurice Harkless' mentor, Nate Blue, believes that Brewster guard Naadir Tharpe would be a good addition for the Red Storm"

Looks like Tharpe was on campus again yesterday according to Zagoria. Even though its not an official visit its still good too see he has friends here and is on campus for the second time in a few weeks. I would love to grab this kid up, that would give us the point guard we need for 2011.

Great to see him on campus multiple times (yesterday w Greene & probably Mo)
Is his family from Worcester ?

If he has come down 3 hrs from Mass each time,
seems like we might be better than 1 out of 7 on his list?

From Tharpe's Twitter and I think from someone's recollection, he really likes New York City.  I could just be making that up, so anyone w/ a confirm, let me know...

(Of course, you don't want a recruit who likes the city so much they stop working on their game to hit the clubs.)

I think you might be mistaking him with Pelle.

He likes to have fun and was the NE Playaz' resident comedian and on-court leader this year.
Lots of personality for his future beat writers.
