After leading St. John’s to a 2-0 record, freshman forward JaKarr Sampson was named Big East Rookie Of The Week.
Sampson’s award comes in the wake of a rough start to the season that saw him shoot just 3-14 in the teams first two games. Now he is the teams leading rebounder with 6.2 boards per game, a far cry from his early season struggles.
In the Johnnies first win of the week against Holy Cross, Sampson dropped 20 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. The points were the highest he has scored in his young collegiate career.
Sampson was a bit quieter in the teams second win against Florida Gulf Coast. The freshman did fill up all facets of the stat sheet however; he had 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assist. That to go with a steal and a block.
Following the victory over Holy Cross, Sampson gave a bit of insight to his success.
“I’m starting to feel more relaxed and comfortable playing with my teammates.”
JaKarr Sampson has been no stranger to the spotlight. He was the No. 31 overall prospect coming into the season and he has already found himself on SportsCenter throwing down thunderous dunks.
He will get a chance to continue his success when St. John’s host South Carolina Thursday Novermber 29, as part of the Big East/SEC Challenge.
