Any chance he grows two inches (assuming he's really 6'8")? We can stick him at center.

Per Alex Kline via Nate Blue.... St. John's commit Maurice Harkless has 14 points & 23 rebounds in an iS8 game today, according to @Nateblueis4real.

Can he play the four? If he can that would help us out a ton because big men are very hard to find especially for 2011. He has the size and length to play some at the four and if he can rebound like that he should be fine.

Polee is going to play the 4 fyi...

Also Harkless and Sampson could play down low if needed. They could both be face up step out 4's or easily be big swing men. This team is going to be filled with combo guys

I assumed Polee would but if we could get some minutes there from Harkless also that would be great. Polee has to gain a lot of muscle to be a four in the Big East though.

I see Sampson as a better fit for the four behind Polee, who I see as four that could potentially transition to the three.

With all of the recruiting success comes some hate from other schools.  A lot of the message boards are joking about us starting five small forwards.

I think the reason we are stockpiling athletes irrespective of their positions is because we will be running/pressing and falling back into a zone.  If we employ a 2-3, there really isn't a difference between the SF and PF spots.  Also, in a 1-3-1 there is even less of a difference, as teams usually put a lengthy forward (take your pick with our current recruits) on the top of the zone and play the PG down low to strip the ball from clumsy big men and run the baseline quickly to deter shots from the corners (biggest weakness of the 1-3-1).

As long as we grab a few guys that can play center, we wil be fine with a roster loaded with athletic wings.  I think this has been the staff's game plan all along.

Everyone we've added is capaple of playing at least two positions.  Sampson, Harkless, and Polee are all capable of holding their own against PF's while making them pay on the other end of the floor.

Per Dave Telep (ESPN Recruiting)....

Harkless was one of the top peformers at the National Prep Showcase, according to Telep.

Maurice Harkless (Jamaica, N.Y./South Kent)
2011, SF, 6-6, 200 pounds
Coach Steve Lavin's class contains plenty of good prospects, but the coach is going to need some of them to be ready to play right away. Harkless gives St. John's not only a talented prospect, but a freshman who will be ready for the college game. A top 50 player, he can swing between forward positions, has good feel and his touch inside the 3-point line makes him a reliable threat. In a large freshman class, look for Harkless to emerge as a player Lavin can trust early in his career.

He really can. His height is going to allow him to get a ton of open looks and he doesn't force shots.  The kid does it all, so when he's letting others score it's because he is doing other stuff to win the game.
Thomas has a good looking shot as well.

I'd have to think that having Lindsey and Harrison going wild will create a ton of open looks for Harkless.  I'd be shocked if we didn't screen and pick and roll the entire set, as we have a team full of guys that and either shoot it or take it to the rim.

I love the fact that Thomas and Harkless are forming a relationship.  Working together will only help their chemistry.  Hopefully Thomas is around all the time to work with incoming class in open gyms and what not.

Saw him for like the 3rd time this weekend.  He is 6'6 not near 6'8.  But he plays longer.  Long arms and legs.  Can cause havoc on inbounds plays.
