Obekpa could be more of a scorer than we expect. I know it is hard to tell with this opponent, but I saw fluid offensive moves. This may be our best center in two decades. If Obekpa solves a couple of bad habits, he'll be an asset offensively too.

Combine that with a terrific defensive presence in the paint, and we have ourselves the bonafide big man we've been waiting for. Albeit not patiently waiting, but waiting.

Another thing I noticed: Pointer has tightened up his game somewhat. Still no jumper, however, his handle has improved. Where he needs to make an adjustment is how he decides to finish a drive. Often, he'll drive past 1 or 2 defenders and throw up a weak finish.

He needs to go strong to the basket on these drives, draw fouls and sink free throws.

Poison is right, Concordia is simply a bad basketball team.  They would struggle in most HS divisions.  I love what coach Lavin was doing in terms of cancer research, but I have to question if a game like that is good preparation for the season.   If you're going to schedule Concordia, then Sonoma State should have been a tougher test.   Just my opinion.

Who do you want to play?  Every team in America in D1 is sprinkling in D2 and D3 teams.  I mean again I don't think anything is gained from these games.  Its a chance to get the legs moving against ppl you don't see in practice every day.

You're right.   These aren't going to be great challenges no matter what.   I think we got a good first half challenge from Post last year though..   Concordia won 9 games last year in DIII.   Again, I absolutely understand the bigger picture for why coach wanted to play them.   And I can't knock him for that.

But I think there are DII and DIII teams that would be a better test and better preparation for the regular season.  That's all.   Small criticism, not a big priority.

On a related topic, next year we're eligible to play some summer games abroad right?   I remember hearing you can only do it every four years.   So, assuming most of the team is back, I think coach will take advantage of that opportunity next preseason.

There are some D2 and D3 players that play professionally overseas. Once in a blue moon, one makes the league. Let's play the teams that these guys played for.

Thats what you need to get from these games.  Obekpa does look more polished.  I've seen him prior and you can tell that the staff has got to him.

Pointer has improved handle dramatically IMO.

Then you see what you have in raw abilities like Jones and Karr.

Bottom line is these aren't the Johnnies many people here are used to.  The talent level is simply on another level fans of this program haven't seen in a great while.

+1, if only we could all appreciate that.

We could have played the D2 Concordia team that's only 25 miles away if not for the prostate cancer thing.

I miss Marathon Oil, the Globetrotters and the Macabees.  :)

If Grinnell still scores 130 ppg, I would have been up for playing them.
