Put the coaching search on hold becuase......
« on: March 26, 2010, 08:58:31 AM »
Monasch has to go first! Ok maybe everything that was whispered is true and Monasch was just an errand boy. It now looks like Father H gave Monasch this duty to hire a coach and he is totally unprepared. Almost like a kid in school that is not paying attention then is suddenly called upon to figure out some geometry question.
What this search looks like is that Monasch was pressured to fire Norm after the Memphis game and started his search then.
Even if Monasch had a crush on Norm wanted to have his children and retire to Key West with him, it had to be clear to him that eventually he was going have to replace him, no? At no point in the last 6 years did the tangerine say to himself, "I really love Norm, I find him very sexy as he is almost as tan as me and I am way to lazy and content to actually embark in some kind of coaching search, HOWEVER, this just isn't working out!"
Shouldn't some sort of preliminary list have been started? I really am starting to believe Monasch is doing this on the fly.

Sorry, but this is utter nonsense. Norm was fired a week ago today. If Monasch has a list and Donovan, Pitino and Hewitt are on top, it's a pretty good list - and as long as Seth Greenberg isn't number 4, and as long as Monasch doesn't panic and start running around pissing his pants and screaming the sky is falling, the sky is falling, as you seem to be doing, it's not yet time to worry.

I don't care how long it takes, I don't care how many people turn the job down, and I don't care how many cretins like Hoops Weiss and Mike Vacaro write stupid columns about the process. I want the right coach, because if they mess this up, it's over. So AFAIAC they should take as much time and look as ridiculous as possible.

I know I mentioned this in another thread and another poster talked about this on redmen... if we can come up with some additional cash... we should reoffer to Donovan.

There is no way any coach would take the job here for less money than they are currently making. However, if you give them significantly more than what he is making, they would at least entertain it.

If I have the right information, Donvan makes 3.5 million a year at Florida. In the state of Florida, there is no State Income Tax. NY State Taxation's highest rate is 6.85%. That means St. John's would have to offer him at least 3.75 million to 3.8 million just for him to break even for his take home pay. I fully understand why he didn't take the offer of 3.0 million.

Now if they throw 4.75 to 5 million per year at him, I think he would reconsider.

Agree 100% with FOAD.  Everyone needs to RE-lax.

So Billy Donovan unofficially turned us down, Pitino supposedly turned us down, and Paul Hewitt almost took the job but then didn't.

We're talking about a guy with 2 titles, a guy with 1 title, and a guy with a final four and a stable of players sent to the NBA.

What has been embarassing about this?  The only embarassing thing has been the media who looks like a bunch of fools jumping on every rumor spewed about by every tom dick and baldi.

At this point, we should take our time, go through back channels a little bit, and find someone who we think is going to win here and make sure he's ready to accept and then announce it.

Agreed. This happens all the time.  Happened with Providence. Happened with Arizona.  Believe it happened with Indiana.  It never goes that smoothly, there are always leaks, because people are hungry for info.

I agree it's not Monasch's fault. You can only offer these coaches your job and hope they take it. You can't force them to sign on the dotted line. I'm just happy that they even went after the big fish instead of immediately turning to someone like Pecora and settling for him.

How come they didn't ask Roy Williams or Coach K? Becuase obviously those type of coaches weren't realistic. Leaking the Donovan thing was fine, but if the next coach and coach after that start declining you are going to look foolish. Monasch should have had a better idea going into to this. This process should have started earlier in the season through back Chanel's.

It didn't start earlier in the season (stupid unfounded rumor about coaching committee notwithstanding) because they didn't want to fire Norm, because they loved him.  But again, it's only been five days. They've made one realistic offer, which was turned down and it may be that they were surprised that it was. If there's a list that goes: Pitino, Donovan, Hewitt, Al Skinner and stops there, we have a problem. If there's a list that includes Pitino, Donovan, Hewitt, Tubby Smith, Ben Howland, Lon Kruger, Herb Sendek, Bob Knight, Frank Martin, Al Skinner, and Seth Greenberg and he's working his way down and interviewing candidates with the view of making a rational and informed decision, that's not so much of a problem, at least until he gets to the bottom.

My point I guess is that every other coaching search seems to follow the same script. GM, owner, AD whoever interviews a bunch of candidates then someone is hired. I have never seen a search where a far fetched candidate's name is dropped only to have him turn down job followed by a lukewarm candidate turning down the job. Seems like maybe they should have conducted some interviews based on prior knowledge, then hired someone. I am not complaining that it has taken too long I am saying this seems really sloppy and unorganized.

It's funny you say that.

" As St. John's started working the phones for a new coach yesterday, a final four group of candidates emerged.

Richmond's John Beilein whose athletic director already has been contacted by St. John's AD Ed Manetta and Siena's Paul Hewitt are among the four, a source close to the selection process says. Bob McKillop of Davidson and Jim Baron of St. Bonaventure are said to be the other two.

Manetta, at the Big East meetings in Florida, confirmed yesterday that he has started contacting athletic directors for permission to speak to prospective candidates, but wouldn't say which. Beilein reportedly is one of them, though.

[...]He is listening to St. John's, the source says, but it's unlikely that he'll do much more. He's very much a family man, with four school-age children, and he lamented moving from the Buffalo area to Virginia in the first place. "

Eerily like what happened last time. And all know how well that turned out.

To be fair, there's a lot of noise bouncing around. The papers are printing whatever stupid thing they hear and everyone who posts has a source and a mole and someone close to the program who overheard a phone call and it all gets analyzed in excruciating mind numbing detail. Whereas Monasch doesn't seem like a guy acts precipitously.

Great job by Monasch basically thinking outside the box. Very happy if this goes through as outside of unrealistic hires this was the best we could do! Outside of a Donovan type I thought the best thing to do would be to grab a mid major solid coach. Lavin brings some juice to the table that a mid major would not have. As with anything luck is involved as we basically got lucky Hewitt turned the job down IMO.
