My point I guess is that every other coaching search seems to follow the same script. GM, owner, AD whoever interviews a bunch of candidates then someone is hired. I have never seen a search where a far fetched candidate's name is dropped only to have him turn down job followed by a lukewarm candidate turning down the job.
It's funny you say that.
" As St. John's started working the phones for a new coach yesterday, a final four group of candidates emerged.
Richmond's John Beilein whose athletic director already has been contacted by St. John's AD Ed Manetta and Siena's Paul Hewitt are among the four, a source close to the selection process says. Bob McKillop of Davidson and Jim Baron of St. Bonaventure are said to be the other two.
Manetta, at the Big East meetings in Florida, confirmed yesterday that he has started contacting athletic directors for permission to speak to prospective candidates, but wouldn't say which. Beilein reportedly is one of them, though.
[...]He is listening to St. John's, the source says, but it's unlikely that he'll do much more. He's very much a family man, with four school-age children, and he lamented moving from the Buffalo area to Virginia in the first place. "
https://www.nydailynews.com/archives/sports/1998/05/20/1998-05-20_storm_coach_list_down_to_4__.htmlEerily like what happened last time. And all know how well that turned out.
Seems like maybe they should have conducted some interviews based on prior knowledge, then hired someone. I am not complaining that it has taken too long I am saying this seems really sloppy and unorganized.
To be fair, there's a lot of noise bouncing around. The papers are printing whatever stupid thing they hear and everyone who posts has a source and a mole and someone close to the program who overheard a phone call and it all gets analyzed in excruciating mind numbing detail. Whereas Monasch doesn't seem like a guy acts precipitously.
