noted him mentioning Mason playing in some summer league games...he plugs the Jungle...and then has some comments on St. John's for next year.

http://lfballonhoops.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

"Last night JR Inman, Jeremy Hazell, and Anthony Mason Jr. played together on a pretty good team of current college players against the Uptownere who had some very good players including Speedy Claxton, Andre Barret, Donnie McGrath (sp), Kenny Aduleke, and others not named. Starting in July the Uptowners will have 4 more professionals playing including Troy Murphy, Dunlevy, and Ryan Gomes.

My sources tell me all the players looked good with JR and Mason having monstor dunks on guys in traffic. The Uptowners won the game by around 6 but everyone left impressed with the younger players on the Dyckman Team. Antonio Pena joins them for the next game."

"Love surfing the various message boards on Rivals, as well as Redmen.com, and BigEast Boards. I also enjoy reading Johnny Jungle, which is way more than just a blog."

"What's going on at SJU?

Norm, one of the true gentlemen in the game, has one last chance to get it done at St. Johns. They have decent talent on board and if they come together as a team they could be pretty good. The one factor everyone is forgetting is they could get the old Rob Thomas back. If he comes back the way I think he will, SJU will be a much improved team. Burrell and all the returning kids who will be improved, plus the new guys who might just be better than the limited press clippings they have, and Rob Thomas. Not bad to me and a team that could definitely compete especially if Anthony Mason is what folks expect him to be."

Man, dude didn't give me a shout out (He'd emailed me in the past)!  He's dead to me!

KIDDING.  Maybe Mase can come back with some more game.  But he has not been what folks expect him to be; or at least, he should be a better player with the skills he has.  He's quick and explosive enough that he should be able to do more damage slashing to the basket, but he was tentative at times and settled for the outside shot.  And in doing that, he took up too much time and killed ball movement.  Coached well, and with good ball movement and defense, there is a surprise(-ish) team in this roster.  But I don't expect to see that team, though there will be improvements.

in his defense I think he was plugging message boards not blogs...which is why he mentioned the jungle being more than a blog...so don't write him off just yet ;D

Agree about Mason...alot of physical talent but he is lacking in a few areas...consistency, mental toughness, game sense...that will prevent him from playing up to his potential.

I think the key is to have his Mom show up to all games next year.  It seems like he was lights out every game she has been at.

Is Johnnyjungle a blog? I m not sure it is, but either way IMO this is the best message board of the 3 mentioned.

Now that I'm out of NY, it's things like the summer games I miss.  Be nice to see Mason putting it together over the summer.

And if it's his mom he needs, pops should pony up the cash to get her in there.  With a good showing all year, and a (currently) weak draft... you never know, kid Mason could make some money at this basketball thing.

Speaking of summer league if anyone wants to come down to the Jersey Shore I'm coaching a team in the Jersey Shore Basketball League. Brevin Knight, Adam Chubb, Alexis Foyle, Tim Begley, Mike Decorso, Allen Watson, and a few others are on my team.

another blog from LFBall about what makes a college player great...mention of Mason, Artest and Reggie Jessie...some excerpts below

http://lfballonhoops.blogspot.com/2008/08/what-makes-college-player-great-and.html

Young players are easily identified as future college and NBA players just by their attitude towards playing. I knew Ron Artist was going to be a very good player when he was 13 years old and was a horrible and somtimes dirty player. Every time I saw him in the Queensbridge Projects in Long Island City, he was on the basketball court. He just always wanted to play. I remember him wanting to play in older games when he was 16 and the guys playing were 20 and older. He was still below average but his mouth watered from his desire to get on the court and PLAY!

Ron had a friend named Reggie Jessie. Reggie was rated higher than Ron and was a very good HS Player. But unlike Ron he did not seem to love playing as much as he loved being around those who did. He was a more "Cool Guy." Reggie had a good career at St. Johns and I am sure he worked out etc. But I am not sure he loved the game like Ron, who to this day still plays in 3 or 4 summer tournaments in NYC as well as in his old neighborhood on occasion.

Locally I think there are a few who meet the fire and desire category. Jeremy Hazell loves to play. At least he did from what I remember. Eugene Harvey used to love the game. Not sure if he is too much of a star to still enjoy. I am sure Keon Lawrence loves to play and will at every opportunity. Mike Rosario seems to be in the same mold. Mike Davis also. I often say some kids have just too much meat in the refrigerator and are never hungry. That is the case with many who play local. JR Inman, Anthony Farmer, Anthony Mason Jr., and others are all very good players. But if they learned to love the game like it was a women, or a great burger, watch out!

Gotta admit, after he said that SJU needs Jarred Famous "more than another team in the country" a few weeks ago.. ??? ... Good ol' LFball was "dead to me" as well... but he's come back "strong" in my book with the two blogs posted on this thread.. ;D .. Could not agree more with his assesment of this years SJU team. Especially his main point that a HEALTHY Rob Thomas is a would give this team a HUGE boost on the offensive end. Plus, i agree with his observation that some players just don'tr have the "fire in their belly" to compete at the highest level like Davis & Jessie... who had ALOT of skills(and had senior year at loughlin) but never took that "next step" in college. In fairness to him i think alot of that was Jarvies fault. He got in his doghouse & basically went uncoached for his final two years at SJU. He might have been a little trobled but he was not a "bad kid" & deserved better than what he got from Mr. "Life Skills".. ::) .. although i gotta disagree with his take on Mase. I think junior does love the game & wants DESPERATELY to be part of a winner here at SJU. Unfortunately, injuries & playing with one of the worst point guards in school history has held him back. The fact Lawrence couldn't run a fast break OR throw a decent alley-oop pass cost him more than a few points imo.... fortunately, he still has ONE more chance to prove that he could be one of the BEST players in the Big East this year & finally get us to posseason play.. :o 8) .. nice find jj!!

p.s. - "In Mase WE Trust".. :) .. peace!

Just to let you know that Rob Thomas has lost 25 lbs since last season, is in great shape and we will be seeing the Rob Thomas of old.
In Rob, Justin and Junior we have 3 forwards who can fill up the bucket.

You are right that we need a break with health this season.
The last 3 seasons we have really been hit with the injury bug.
If we are to play up to our potential everyone needs to be healthy.
