Chris obekpa especially when he was younger was so overrated. Owens is a better offensive player. A better defender. And almost as good shot blocker.

I think a few posters like to diss Obekpa's game because he was a clown.  He was an incredible shotblocker (became the St. John's all-time shotblocker as a sophomore, if I'm not mistaken).  He blocked 133 shots as a freshman!  He was also an underrated passer.

I didn't particularly care about some his shenanigans, but he had one trait that he did incredibly well, and it was swatting shots.

Besides, Obekpa's numbers are similar to Owens's.

I wish guys would  just tap the ball to themselves instead of slap boxing it as hard as they can

Owens is one of my favorite players in recent years. Kid works his ass off and hopefully he can continue to add some weight and develops his mid range jumper. He will be a nice piece for us for the next 2+years.

Agreed, he and Ellison play the hardest

Baldi hopping on Jungle Dave's Ellison train :)

Agree on Tariq showing the most effort. I think Ponds plays a little harder than Malik even though his defense isn't there yet but for a small guy he rebounds really well but I like the way Malik is coming along now. Hope he stays

The way Ellison played. Teams will have to really cover him , loosening up Ponds and Lovett.  The real nice thing about the Dpaul game was the balanced scoring. Some players play better than their ratings and some play worse. Fortunately for us Owens is exceeding his. I think next year w some added weight and experience he's going to be very good. Throw Clark in at PF  and I think we can be good. Hopefully Owens can decrease his fouling. I'm also surprised he's not playing more and Yakwe less.

Owens has been better than I expected. He was another kid you take a chance on because he possess athletic ability that a small percentage of players have. Real credit to staff for establishing inroads so quickly and getting Owens to believe in what they were going to do here.

I got plenty of room on Ellison bandwagon.

The fact that he is 6 11 doesn't hurt either. And his redshirt year helped him. He was a real toothpick, gained weight and learned .

We can acknowledge, on the one hand, that Obekpa was one of the best shot blockers college basketball has seen in the past decade and, on the other, note that he was a world class head case and terrible teammate, who refused to come off the bench during what was a "play in" game in the Big East tourney and got himself suspended for a tourney game costing our seniors (many of whom I loved) a legit shot at winning a first round game.

Chris obekpa especially when he was younger was so overrated. Owens is a better offensive player. A better defender. And almost as good shot blocker.

Owens was a smart player from day one. I saw it last season in the scrimmage. He was clearly well coached. So was Ponds. Gimme a team of guys like that.

With Owens and Clark playing the 3/4, we probably only need to a power forward and two centers, since we have no centers.

I'll take Obekpa over any center we've had in the last 20 years. And I'll live with all of the horrible things he did. He didn't quit the team in the middle of the season, start the biggest mass brawl/riot in NBA history or kill anyone, but shit, you'd think he was worse if you read this board.

I think Owens is the better player. I Think he is underrated. He isn't terrible on offense . He tries his hardest on defense. I have always thought freshman and sophomore opekpa was over rated.

Obekpa was all the things I said (good and bad). It is indisputable that he quit on us twice in the biggest spots.  I don't care how talented you are, I don't want kids like that on my team.

He didn't literally quit the team in the middle of the season. And I think your accusation of him quitting on the team twice isn't 100% confirmed. It's been talked about here. That doesn't make it a fact.

Obepka was a good shot blocker but he wasn't good at anything else. He was often out of position on defense and just going for blocks. He had a talent for blocking shots but he also left the team high and dry for the NCAA game. Do not have fond memories of him at all
