Next year - with a deeper bench
« on: February 28, 2018, 11:43:27 AM »
1. Shot selection

2. On offense - play inside/ outside...go to the basket...at least to start games.

3. Sit after one or two turnovers.....include everyone,,,,,,sit after two bad outside shots.....even if they're made.

4. Get another big with at  least a little back to the basket game.

5. Have some more defined roles.....not everyone should shoot whenever they feel like it.

6. With a deeper bench play more than a few minutes of three quarter pressure on defense.

7. Sit after one or two defensive lapses.

8. Rebound....sit after not boxing out.

9. Practice more against a zone.

10. Bust the bubble....get it done.

Agree, bench is best way for a coach to get these points across.

All the above is doable.  Let's get started now on re-recruiting current players, backup plan in case Shamorie leaves, weight room getting stronger, finding a grad/juco big.

(1) Go get the ball on the offensive glass like your life depends on it. That simple rule makes bad coaches ok, ok coaches good, and good coaches great. Teams that hit the offensive glass move on in March. Simon could be one of the best offensive rebounders in the country next year. Clark and Owens should be trouble there too. Pond already is. This should be a strength. If Jarvis can have a top 15 offensive rebounding team with Glover and Emmanuel, why can't Mullin with this group?

(2) Play more zone.

(3) Play through Simon more in the post. His lack of shooting kills our spacing. Let him pass out of the post, face up and take it with 1-2 dribbles, or run some hi-low. I've never seen a player given more room to shoot than what Xavier gave him yesterday. He drilled two treys with his defender anchored in the lane 10 feet. They were defending us 5 on 4 and I think Mack wanted him to hit a few of those.

Crazy thing is that statistically Simon was out best 3PT shooter at 42%.
