Top Trio in Country
« on: September 27, 2018, 12:36:08 PM »
Based solely on the combination of experience and RSCI rank, I'd have to imagine Simon (#30), Heron (#18), and Ponds (#35) are the top trio in country after the mass NBA draft defections.

3 NBA prospects manning the perimeter. Easily in the running for one of the best backcourts ever assembled in Queens, on paper. Time to show out.

In the BE We’ll have the best #1, best #2, and best #3 player in the conference. We’ll be absolutely huge on the perimeter. Have some luck with injuries and there is zero reason not to be a top 25 team.

I don't doubt that individually, but I think I'd be tempted to choose Nova's whole group 1-3. I think Gillespie is one of the most underrated players in the conference, Quinerly is ridiculous, Booth is a proven champ, they have the Albany transfer, etc.

I think all three of Simon, Heron, and Ponds have NBA potential.

If you would take booth, gillespe, and quinerly over Ponds, heron and Simon then I take back every good thing I’ve ever said about you :)   Really tho, I know you don’t believe that.

And I love Joe Cremo, I think he’ll be a killer for them. But I’ll take LJ/Dixon as the 4th.

SJU group vs the Nova group?  Well Ponds and Simon already crushed last years group head-to-head and that’s without Heron.  I like our group.  Two huge, physical and defensively excellent ones in Simon and Heron, and Ponds is unstoppable.  We also might have the 3 best rebounding backcourt in the country this year.  We also have a big scorer in Dixon and JC AA in Figueroa.  A lot in our favor as we are pretty stacked.  This group is beastly.

As far as upperclassmen go we have Nova beaten in all areas. I think Paschall and Booth are more so complimentary players, how quickly their star freshmen adapt will determine how they fair. Same story for X, Prov and Hall. They're all extremely talented, but young and inexperienced as teams. Experience wins in this league.

Nova was national champs man! Booth has two rings with two major roles in those runs! Also is Paschall considered a three? Samuels. It's close.

Hahaha yes. Let me be more clear, I think SJU Ponds, Heron, and Simon are better than Quinerly, Gillespie, and Booth. It's the the rest of Nova's guards and wings that make it close. The depth, experience, past coaching, achievements, etc.

My original post did specify that I was referring to the top trio in terms of RSCI rank and experience, though, and not the best on-court trio--although it can certainly be argued.

Because so many kids leave early these days, we may have the top trio of guys in terms of ranks and experience. That's crazy to me. I don't think it's been the case before for us.

For example, 26 players have already been drafted from the top 100 players just from the 2016 RSCI and several others are no longer in college for other reasons (like Rawle Alkins and Kobi Simmons). That leaves Marques Bolden as the only player ranked higher than Heron left in college basketball! Simon is the fourth highest RSCI player left from 2015 (Chase Jeter, Derryck Thornton, and Jalen Adams are higher), and Ponds is top ten left from 2016.

Talking about the trio, makes me think/wish for a replay of "Run TMC"--hopefully we can see a little of that offense this year, something Chris apparently is happy with.
