Slice and Matt

If we still had Slice, do you guys figure this team would have had more depth and be in play for better recruits right now? Would we have seen much of an Xs and Os difference? SHU and Gtown have brighter futures now it seems.

I think Matt is solid, but I feel like Slice was the guy that gave us a chance with bigger fish to at least close in on especially if we were going to one day be a 20 win team again like we are now.

There is no question in my mind that we’d have a better team and would be bigger and deeper with Slice.

I like the creativity Matt uses in recruiting, but I don’t think he can evaluate talent worth a lick. I’ve never seen an assistant coach so uninvolved on the sidelines. I wish his ego would have allowed him to let Slice be the lead.

I've beaten this dead horse plenty too often. St Johns has no depth and 4 guys who can play in the big east. Not much else to be said about it. Where are the recruits

Matt seems like a great guy.  He has done a solid job on the transfer market.

But he's not a lead recruiter on any major staff.

He doesn't coach during games at all.  Again, he just shoots the sh#t with the Italian dude who also does nothing. 

A lead recruiter should be able to do some coaching if he is not also a stud recruiter.  He doesn't.

It's not just on him, as Mitch doesn't do anything other than inform the shooting guards (which to his credit are manifold on this poorly formed roster) where to stand on offense or defense and give quick bursts of advice. 

And then Chris.  When things go bad, he shits on officials and chats with the scoreboard keeper.  Etc

St Jean, the joke goes, is the coach.  Well it's not a joke.  Most of the sets on offense are clearly from him.  Defense too.  He runs the plays in the huddle.

The problem isn’t Matt. The problem is the head coach. He constructed this staff. When Slice left, he needed to bring in a competent coach, he didn’t. Now we have one inexperienced coach on our staff who can’t recruit. One recruiter who’s specializes in transfers. Two hall of fame token heads who can’t do either. As much respect as Slice has for Mullin after witnessing this clown shown after one season he didn’t walk, he ran away.

The thing that is most disappointing is the arrogance of Mullin. I believed he would be smart enough to surround himself with a staff that would make him successful, he’s done the opposite. If he’s not willing to make changes to his staff then he needs to go. I would like to replace St. Jean and Richmond.

The Slice loss hurt on two fronts; an experienced college recruiter and an experienced former college head coach. That being said, maybe Mullin wasnt comfortable with Slice’s style of recruiting. When Mullin had Slice whacked, he created two holes that were never filled. Throw in he never replaced Zendon as a big man coach, not difficult to figure out where we are and how we got here.

There are a few scenarios that need to play out today before we put on our "dancing" shoes.  If a couple scenarios doesn't play out accordingly, then trouble may be lurking around the corner for us.

It was about replacing the experience a former HC and high major assistant brought to the staff. 

On the recruiting front, I think we'd be worse.  Perhaps significantly worse.  Remember who Slice focused on that year -- top tier blue chippers who weren't likely to choose St. John's and who had major red flags surrounding their recruitment.  He was trading off a deserved reputation from his days at Pitt, where he found success through City connections with landing the exact opposite type player, the 4 or undervalued 3 star recruits that develop into excellent 3/4 year players and promote continuity.  Many of those connections went by the wayside and it seemed Slice recruited as if we were Kentucky, except that the kids he landed (like Briscoe) were not about Slice but rather Cal and the KY brand. 

There was a rumor on this board that part of the dispute between Slice and Matt related to that kid Walker who was at Manhattan versus Ponds.  Can you imagine where we'd be if Slice won out on that?

This topic is absolutely relevant now whether we dance or we don't dance. Now that we had a decent season in terms of wins/losses ratio and some upsets and it was not just a throw away rebuild year, certain things are highlighted and looked at. Clearly, an experienced coach was sorely missed this year on staff to keep the boys focused with some of these bad strings. After a 20 win season, you would have liked to see stronger (and more) players in the pipe line for us to absorb a potential Shamorie departure and keep building toward CONSISTENT contender status.

No matter, how you view it this was an underperfoming BE year in an unusual weak conference year and I am just concerned that we are reaching a max out point with no plan in place and you know Gtown, Providence and SHU will only get better. We better hope we make the tournament and show some type of pulse or things can get very bad very quickly and we back to square 1............

Also to consider- with no Shamorie whether in terms of his production or at least forcing teams to game-plan, how many wins do we have?? And he had an off-year.....
