Would be a big fan of GSJ taking over

I cant wrap my head around how anyone thinks hiring Greg St. Jean as a first time head coach is a good idea.

Consider who's saying it and no surprise.

I would not be a fan of this, but objectively speaking the only way I see GSJ is this. One could argue he actually has coached the team the past 4 years so the players would likely stay and the drop off will not be that huge. Second, it would have to be mandatory that he gets a very powerful assistant and new staff. If he will not be getting paid much as a new rookie coach that money goes to top line recruiters and Xs and Os guys. The team next year would be decent and would not be a full reboot like Cluess. Also GSJ and family has NBA connects so its not all a dark hole.

Still in all- I think Repole needs to open his wallet for Pitino and that be the end of it. Do not think Hurley is coming and we should not be going after Cluess or no name assistants.

Some of you fail to see the most important factor in hiring a new coach. A proven winner. That is Tim Cluess. Won at every level. You will all be very happy when has us perennially hovering around the top 25 and vying for tourney berths.
Won at levels that are far inferior to the big east.  I don't know much about Iona basketball but it appears Cluess is a wonderful Xs and Os coach. However, he would also need to recruit at an insanely high level to turn this ship around.  I don't think he has done much, if any, positive recruiting at Iona.  Considering he's been consistently making the tournament out of the maac, why has he never been approached for any other high profile jobs?

GSJ was already the de facto in game coach when Mullin was here.  So you would pay Mullin 4 million to walk, lose the potential recruiting advantages that came with having two HOF players as coaches, and then continue with the exact same sub par in game coaching that was going on over the last 4 years?

If this happens, I am done donating money to this school until I see them take the program seriously again.

St Jean ran Mullin’s system. Not his own. The plays we know were his (out of bounds) were fantastic. He’s young, hungry and a hard worker. Has NBA connections.

GSJ is going to get a chance somewhere sometime soon and we will be upset we missed out.

1. we don't have the money
2. if we did through RP....he doesn't want to pay for Hurley
3. Hurley doesn't want to come.

I can't see any other reason why hes not here yesterday.

If Cluess gets the job he will do a great job for the Johnnies. Look at what he has done at every level. Success he had at Iona is absolutely stunning considering he played in a high school gym.

I think we have known this for a long time. Cragg can fix that.

With the right price, anything is desirable.

Im a younger johnnie but still, I think hiring Lavin and Mullin showed they were trying and wanted to turn the corner. Hiring Cluess shows they are scaling back, I don't know if its money saving or satisfied with mediocrity or both. There is no way we are going anywhere near a sweet 16 if Cluess is the pick. Bad system, no big time experience, no real connections. But cheap and local thats become the St John's way.

After Hurley is done kicking Cragg in the nuts I’d sign St. Jean to the most school-freindly deal college basketball has ever seen.

Make him add Calhoun or a similar older coach to impart decades of lessons.

He’s a stud and we’d keep our core intact.

If Hurley isn’t an option we have to kick the tires on other coaching candidates. We can’t just go with Cluess. Have we contacted anyone else?
