Cokers dropped 20 lbs...
« on: August 22, 2008, 12:40:58 PM »
... appears ready to "step up" this year according to Norm.. :) .. Got this from austor of redmen.com who got it from goodmans blog :

RANDOM NOTES :

St. John’s coach Norm Roberts told me that big man Dele Coker has dropped about 20 pounds. "He’s more athletic, has become more confident and has as good of a summer as anyone,” Roberts said.… The Red Storm picked up a key commitment from Omari Lawrence the other day.

p.s. - hmmmmm... i believe someone on this board posted a few months ago that Coker had been at sju ALL summer(along with Kennedy, Evans & Horne) working in the gym & improving his post moves..  ;) ;D 8) .. like i said, dele has a great work ethic & will be much improved this season imo.

From what I've heard he does look in a lot better shape but he still isn't there. Getting in shape is big though.

He's got a lot of potential...he needs to get a better understanding of where to be on the floor and postioning...how to use his big body without fouling.  Hard to learn that in a summer just takes time on the court.

I was impressed on his passing ability last year and his touch wasn't too bad either.  He also has some attitude which I like...he knows how to send a message when needed.

GREAT to hear.  Like jumpin johnny said, he needs a better understanding of where to be on the floor.  Bigs can take a little time to develop but he has some power and quickness to him.  (I like his touch as well, but I missed seeing his passing ability.)  The game against Notre Dame, though he fouled out in 14 minutes, he showed a little bit of nasty to him.

One of the frosh needs to improve and surprise and the team will get to .500 (overall).

This statement is true but its a sad commentary that in year 5 we need a surprise to make it to .500

Agreed, but they're still our team.  And I will be surprised a little if one of the frosh-sophomores doesn't surprise.  The talent isn't top line, but teams wanted guys like Coker and Rob Thomas for a reason.

Any signs that Rob is beginning to return to his pre-injury form?

U heard right JJ... he has CLEARLY put on some lbs & appears to be a legit 6'7... as far as Rob goes i haven't seen him but kob(and a few others) has stated on more than one occasion that he has definitely dropped the weight & looked good runnin' the floor in the practice/scrimmage he watched a week or two ago.. 8) .. IMHO, there is PLENTY of talent on this team... Top 20 talent? No... but TALENTED players nonetheless & just about all have them were recruited by "major" schools. PERIOD... I'm not going to bother listing their rankings & what teams were recruiting our kids for the hundreth time again... the bottom line is if Mase has a big year, JB continues to mature, a couple of our other sophs(kennedy, coker) step up their game & the frosh just contribute a little we can EASILY be a .500 team or better... these are not unreasonable expectations & i for one can't wait for the season to start... we have the horses & it's ALL on Norm & co. to get this team to the post-season.. ;D .. let the games begin!!!

haha...I'm not saying he's a great passer but he threw a few back door passes that surprised me.

The same one they used with Anthony Glover i guess.. ;) .. but in all seriousness, he was listed at 6'6 last year and imo he looks like he has grown an inch... which would put him at 6'7.. :) .. Regardless of his actual height, IMHO, Kennedy is really going to step up this year. He is tough as nails, wants to win badly & realizes that PT is going to have to be earned around here at the SF spot with him, Mase, Thomas & Roberts... btw - I have spoken to him several times and he is a kid u have no problem rooting for... he came here to help put SJU "back on the map" & my guess is he will play an integral role around here the next 3 years doing just that.. 8) .. peace!

Did Coker need to lose 20 pounds?

I just hope they are working on his footspeed and court awareness so he knows where to be and he knows where to be before the play unfolds..... He was always a step behind which led to a ton of fouls

Agreed with JJ - centers got DEEP position on him last year in the post and then he was lost.  I think he was doing better at the end of the season with that... anyone who gets to see practice, keep us updated.

No doubt... like parcells said about #89 : "That Bavaro is a stone-face man. I'd have to have to fight that son of a b*tch".. 8) .. Much like "rambo", Coker is a quiet guy but has a passion for the game. And u have to remember he has only been playing ball for 3 years since he came to the U.S. from nigeria... The kid WANTS to get better & has spent the entire summer working on his game. Plus, i love the way he likes to "send a message"(with his elbow or his chest) every once in a while. That "shot" he gave to that kid from south florida last year was devestating.. :o :) .. btw - with improved/stronger play from him, Evans, Burrell & the addition of the 7'1 Wat. Our oppenents are going to realize pretty quickly that there will be NO more "chippies" against the johnnies anymore..  ;D .. peace!
