St Johns vs IONA scrimmage?
« on: August 29, 2008, 08:35:19 AM »
This will be St Johns first loss

Got this from the Iona boards owner GuyF

"After the practice, all the players made their way through the crowd to say hi and introduce themselves. A nice touch.

After the kids made the rounds, Willard was surrounded by a dozen or so fans who shot him various questions. You can tell he's very happy with what he has to work with, and the progress they've already made after only a little more than a week of practice. And while he did confirm there will be no exhibition game at home, there will be a far-more-valuable scrimmage against a "very good Big East team", which will better prepare them for the start of the season (and Wisconsin the second game in). "

At first I was thinking it would be Louisville(with the Pitino connection) but the distance might be too far, so now we're thinking its either St Johns or UConn.

well, they said "very good big east team"...so you can draw your own conclusions.

What would you expect WIllard to say? "We're gonna play a decent Big East team?"

The last two years, Iona has been one of the nations' worst teams.

Marco are you on drugs? When did I say that SJU was top 25 material? Or even a good team for that matter?
Clearly they are not. But to say that Iona, a team coming off a 12-20 season would beat us "guaranteed" is flat out nice personic.

Why exactly is going to give us so much trouble? Who exactly is going to guard Justin Burrell and Anthony Mason?

Iona could play zone,  and let mason chuck it from the cheap seats which he would oblige. But if we Iona did have to play man to man, I'd put either Kashif Pratt or Rashon Dwight on Mase and Gary Springer Jr or Alejo Rodriguez(who was All City) on Burrell. Iona76 St JOhns 69

alejo rodriguez (who i saw many times in HS and a few times last year) couldnt touch justin burrell. pratt couldnt get playing time on a poor big east team last year. SJU should be able to beat iona 8 or 9 times out of 10.

You saw Alejo play last year? Where? He redshirted and was hurt. Iona has a 7 foot transfer from Louisville who will at time be the 3, whose going to guard him ? Springer can handle Burrell

If they do play, SJU will win by 20. Johnnies are far from great, but they are much deeper than Iona.
Kashif Pratt? Are you serious? How do you know he's any good? He went to Seton Hall and couldn't get off the bench on a team that won 3 conference games. Where has anyone seen him play?

I can't believe that you're actually an Iona fan, and an SJU fan. Oh, the pain.

its bad enough that you talk smack about Iona but those gay porn pictures of the Yankees really got to go...and I'm a Mets fan.

Ok DO you guys think ST Johns would beat Siena? or dare I say Niagara? I bet last year you thought they would, but what happenned? Iona lost to both last year by 6 points or less with only a couple of D1 players on the team. This is a new year, Iona is returning only 4 players from last years team with a ton of talent coming in. SJU would lose to both Siena and Iona this year

Marco I really don't think you believe this to be true but you are just taking your stand and not backing down. The real issue at hand is we might scrimmage Iona to begin the season which would be a good caliber team to scrimmage against.

Oh I never back down, Im an E THUG. But I do think Iona beats St Johns, Siena might smack the Johnnies

i agree that siena would smack sju around but considering that iona has only 4 players back, there is no way that they would win more than 2 or 3 out of 10 games against SJU. iona is bringing in some good recruits for the MAAC level but this year they wouldnt beat SJU. theyre still freshmen.  machado, trinny, and keon should be very good.  also, it was a VERY smart move by willard to bring in mo hicks' son for a walk-on spot.

none of those teams are beating this year kids. Just watching them practice they aren't soft and they have a point guard
