Marco, there are a ton of people in this country that CAN'T dig themselves out of poverty.  Yes, part of what you said is certainly true that a lot of people that will be making some money off the government are lazy and are happy living off the government.  What about those that can't dig themselves out of poverty, though?

Why can't they dig themselves out?

I really don't think that you're in touch with reality at this point. Poverty can be an awful, awful cycle that lasts generations.  Think about it:

You are born into a family that is already in poverty, living in a very rough area in the country with possibly an unstable family.  Because the area is in a rough area, the public school system is pretty poor.  Go to public grade and middle school, but the education there is poor, so when you try and get into a private high school with a scholarship or financial aid, it doesn't happen and you get turned down.  Then go to public high school, where once again the education is awfully poor, and because of your educational background, there's a good chance that either the grades won't be very good, and even if your grades are pretty to very good, colleges may frown upon it because it's an urban public school with low academic standards.  Add that to the fact that you probably won't get a good SAT score because the SAT is all about $$ and the amount of $$ used on preparation (there are several studies that prove this) and suddenly you find yourself in community college and because of your background of being in a poor educational environment, you have mediocre grades in in ther 2 year school and even if you don't, your family can't afford to send you to a four year college, leading to a job that doesn't pay much.  And the cycle starts all over gain...

This is happening to millions of families across the country.

That's almost all true BUT how is throwing a $1,000 check to the kids unstable parents going to change that cycle?  I think the best chance for any kid is to have a stable family life.

If the kid has a school to go to...no matter how bad...he's gotta chance.  Its up to the kid and his family to take any opportunity and make the most of it.  If a kid wants a better life and approaches a teacher/librarian to learn...in almost all cases they won't be turned down.  Getting a job and going to a community college is not the end of the world.
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

Have you ever heard of the military?  Spare me the generations of being poor and the cycles.  99% of the poor in the country were physically qualified to be in the military. I don't know what the term is, probably somewhere between 3-5 years, but you come out with paid training and then get college paid for and can even take college classes while you are enlisted.

CYCLE OVER.

There are so many ready made excuses.  Do you realize that most of the poorest inner city kids in this country have reources beyond a lower middle class suburban child?  For example, for a nominal fee any kid in NYC can have access to one of the best library systems in the world?  There are hardworking kids that come out of public schools all across the country.  There are teachers that dedicate their lives to serving inner city populations.

Kids don't have to go to MIT to do well.  In fact, undergratuate education is becoming less and less important.  If they go to a CUNY school for next to nothing--in many cases they will actually get PAID to go to college--and do well in school and on standardized testing they can go to a very good. graduate school

My grandfather dropped out of school in the sixth grade to support his family after his father died.  He lost five siblings to disease during the Great Depression.  He had thre jobs--one of which was delivering urine samples--and took a humble job as a bus driver when got older.  He worked hard to put all his children through college.  He literally built his house wih his own two hands and invested his money wisely.  By the time he died he was living in a great town in Bergen County, NJ and could be considered wealthy.

He was never waiting around for a handout from anyone.  That is what America is all about.  If you work hard in this country, you will succeed.
