St. John's Shouldn't Consider Firing Norm Roberts
By  JOSH ALPER

Updated 1:01 PM EST, Mon, Feb 2, 2009

St. John's beat South Florida 65-48 on Sunday to improve to 12-9 on the season. It's a modest record, to be sure, but it is also one more win than they had all of last season, a step in the right direction for a team that's been stumbling through the wilderness for far too long. Take that with the victory over Notre Dame, ranked 10th at the time, and you've got the best Red Storm season in years.

That's why the school shouldn't be thinking twice about keeping coach Norm Roberts on the sidelines. He took over a team in shambles in 2004 and a program without facilities to compete. Predictably, he struggled and it's been an uphill climb to bring talent back to Queens. He finally got it done for this season and then watched as their best player, Anthony Mason Jr., went down for the season with an injury and other key players missed games with pains as well. Still, the Red Storm have played better than you'd expect under the circumstances.

The school doesn't sound convinced, though. The Rev. Donald Harrington, president of St. John's, spoke to reporters after the game and gave Roberts a lukewarm vote of support.

"We'll see how the season goes like we did last year and at the end of the whole season we'll sit down with (Athletic Director) Chris Monasch and evaluate him," Harrington said. "When we sit down and do a comprehensive evaluation, all of that will be on the table."

Harrington said that boosters have expressed "a broad spectrum of satisfaction and dissatisfaction" with Roberts. Like some supporters of Army football, St. John's suffers from an anachronistic personality disorder. It isn't 1985 anymore, the Big East isn't a cozy group of programs and St. John's doesn't have a recruiting advantage just because they're in New York. Roberts has made strides, and, with a strong recruiting class coming, should keep making those strides.

Changing directions to a different coach right now would be the wrong move. Patience should be their blueprint because the current plan is working.

It seems like every now and then, writer bring up that win over Notre Dame.
Should be pointed out that since both teams are now 3-6 in the league, that it's not even an upset anymore?

Roberts has had wins over NC State and Pittsburgh (twice) that were more impressive than this ND win.

That guy who wrote that is an idiot.  I love how everyone keeps bringing up the notre dame win likes the best win in school history. The same Notre Dame team who could be headed to the NIT if it doesnt turn it around. And what great recruting class? Its really 1 guy who is a stud in Omari Lawrence but if Lance would be in that mix trhen I would say then it is great rectruting class. Bottom Line is Norm should be fired. There is no buzz around the program , Carneseca and the Garden are empty and this article was written after a win against a very very bad South Florida team.

I would love to see Calipari next season on the St Johns sidelines!

Although I'm on the same page & think Norm barely has the program headed (VERY VERY)
slowly in the right direction,  the 1 more win reason than last year is terrible.

Not counting Duke (since we didnt play them yet, they're not in our RPI)
we had the weakest OOC schedule in years.

Our OOC Strength of schedule this yr is a ridiculous 340 out of 344 div 1 teams

I agree this writer is either a nice person or a fan of Uconn or another Big East team.  ND might be lucky to get to the NIT at this rate!  I think they also lose to SH at home if the refs don't call two techs on SH in less than two minutes at the end of the game with SH up by four.

STJ has beaten Pitt and Louisville as well as NC State that were all much better than this ND team.  The Hamilton/Spears team would destroy this team and finished with a better record.  This guy has no idea what he is talking about.

What do you want the article to say,
That Norm should be fired?

I am willing to bet Mr. Alper has not seen  SJU play all year, has not been to the morgue that our home court has become, and knows little about the game and how it should be played. The Empire State Building was completed in less than two years. Norm has had five. Enough already.

Nobody wants Norm to stay more than the coaches and fans of other Big East programs.  He sucks.  He is no threat to keep recruits at home.  He is a doormat.

I guess no Big East teams wanted Omari Lawrence or even Lance?

Yeah, Lance,Syl and  both Jones all play for SJU according to Baldi. Not sure if I am missing anyone else? But those four all had the Baldi kiss of death post "the kid is coming".

Why wouldn't they?  Calhoun has a TON to gain by keeping Norm as coach rather than someone with teeth.  Norm almost had a 1 recruiting coup over Calhoun, and Calhoun swept in and took him away, with barely a peep from Norm.

I think my kids will be complaining about Norm! I have posted that many times! He sucks in every way imaginable but the admin will not do anything about it anytime soon. He will probably break the NCAA record for career losses!

THe only article that I want to read about Norm's status is one that says he's been fired. He's proven without a shadow of doubt that he is a terrible coach in every facet of the game.
