How is Baylor doing?
« on: February 25, 2009, 03:49:51 PM »
I know some posters compared the situation at Baylor to that of St Johns. So I ask, how is Baylor doing this year. Here is a quick summary from collegehoops.net

Baylor was another trendy pick to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, returning an experienced team with most of their starters from last year’s surprise Tourney team, including preseason Wooden Award candidate Curtis Jerrells.  They began the season ranked in the Top 20.

Now they have dropped seven of their last eight, are completely out of the NCAA bubble picture, and – at 16-10 – in danger of missing out on the NIT.

That was last year, and as it said it returned all of its players. What happened? Some here, were quick to point out how well Baylor was doin after the scandal. Now what?

Baylor would not be 16-10 in the Big East

Dude you make no sense.  Their colle ALREADY brought them back.  They are 16-10 and it is considered a disappointment.

They had NO HISTORY.  They had a player kill another player.  They had two of the best players in their team's history transer out and lead other teams to the NCAA (Lucas led OSU to the Final Four!) .  They had a coverup and firing all around:  coach staf all the way up to AD.

They also had illegal money given out.

And they are already back.  Heck, they were back two years ago!

We have a group of guys go to a strip club.  Who gives a sh*t?!!!!

I make no sense? I wasnt the one of the stooges comparing the SJU and Baylor situations months back. 1 has nothing to do with the other, but since Baylor did make the NCAA's LAST YEAR- it was brought up. Im just pointing out that this team is doin sht this year. Same as St Johns, neither will be in NIT or NCAA's barring a miracle

Marco, I've got to counter you here.  I agree that the Baylor reclamation job shouldn't give folks a chubby - and I would add that Scott Drew should consider leaving for a better paid job while the getting's good (his team has some serious flaws, they shouldn't have made the NCAAs last year, and the fans are going to turn on him next year or the year after that unless they play some kind of defense).

But they have winning records in the past two years, a talent base to build on, and they compete in a tough conference in a tough recruiting state.  I am sure there is a little ca$h flowing to the players there, but they have certainly done a better job there.

How does one not have anything to do with the other?  There were three big programs hit at the same time:  STJ, Baylor, Ohio St.  I won't even get into Ohio State!!!

Baylor has never been good.  They have three all-time visits to the NCAA tournament or something like that. They lost the equivalent of their Chris Mullin and Walter Berry due to their situation.  We at least kept Hill and Hamilton.

You are a professional Norm apologist.

So now your saying a 16-10 record in that conference and missing out on the NIT and NCAA tournys, Baylor is back. Back from where and where exactly are they back to?

they had a much worse situation than us in terms of the scandals and have come back to be ranked and make the ncaa tournament...so you're not making any sense right now

Theyre ranked? Where?  Purdue beat on them in the 1st round last year, and they were preseason top 20 this year. So now they are right back where they belong, on the outside looking in, after a good year. So did Scott Drew do a good job this year?

so bc they arent doing well now it erases probably the best rebuilding effort in the history of the ncaa? it erases the national ranking they had? it erases the ncaa tournament appearance? and it brings them down to our level?  bc neither of us will make the tourny this year, it brings them down to our level?  good for you man, thats a hell of a way to look at things

Um, yessss!!!  They are rebuilt.  Done. History.

And "that conference?"  Have you seen the Big 12 over the last two years?  Kansas won it all last year.  Blake Griffin is the best player in the country by a huge margin.  OU might win it all this year.

Kansas is right up there with any Big East team. Missouris ranked #11, and they have four ranked team.  That is a higher % ranked then the Big East.

KSU, OSU, and Texas AnM could all be ranked.  Texas AnM has 20 wins.  That confernce is BRUTAL.  And there is no weak bottom half like the Big East.  They didn't have one team with a losing record entering conferenc play.

SO if Norm makes the NCAA's next year and than missses out again for a few years, hes done a great job rebuilding?

No.  He wouldn't have done a "great job" rebuilding.  Six years is a disgrace and way too long.  That is not a great job.

If he makes the tournament next year (ok, I'm back from laughing my ass off), he'll have done "not terrible" job of rebuilding.

I'd kill for 16-10.

Baylor would not be 16-10 in the Big East

We wouldn't be 16-10 in the Big 12.
Or did you forget that's a damn good conference, too?

Norm's not finishing well in any high major conference.
He'd be an upper tier team in the MAAC, and a top 3 team in the America East. And in all seriousness, that is where he belongs.

I'm not sure we'd beat Binghamton or Vermont.
