Rob Thomas = Tyrone Grant
« on: March 04, 2009, 02:24:18 PM »
That's who Rob Thomas reminded me of last night. A warrior on the boards, a little out of shape but battling hard, and a great finisher around the hoop. I know this is not what was expected of Rob before he blew out his knee, but if he can become this team's version of Tyrone Grant for the next 2 years then we are in great shape. Ideally, next year I'd love to start a slightly undersized team with Thomas and Burrell and Evans providing that energy he brings off the bench. Great game for Rob - and I really hope he can be Ty for us every game from here on out...

I agree with that. If he can continue to build on this game, maybe he can really fill that void for us.

The first couple of times he tried to take it inside, he was rejected, but he didn't give up. He kept coming at Gtown, and he figured out how to draw fouls, and how to score.

Not bad comparison.

Thing is I don't think Ty could hit that sweet turnaround J like Rob did last night.

Great point - that was def not Ty's forte.  Hey if we've got a Ty + a sweet J on our hands, even better!

Tyrone Grant is a relentless inside worker who may get into the league by being a rebounding and defensive specialist. Strictly a power forward type, Grant, while undersized (probably 6'6"), does all the dirty work inside and was a very key part to a good St. John's team. One could argue his absence from the Duke game cost the Red Storm a big win.
Grant knows his way around the paint well, but possesses no perimeter game whatsoever. Had a few injury problems this past year (notably in his wrist) , but played through them effectively. Played very well at the Portsmouth pre-draft camp, earning MVP honors, but was surprisingly not invited on to Phoenix. With that said, that reminds me a bit of Tyrone Braggs last year, who did very much of the same thing, and actually is much of the same player. Braggs was the second to last pick of the draft last year, which should be the worst case scenario for Grant this year.
