And I think the biggest problem I have with Norm forcing kids out is the
fact that he gets this "squeaky clean" rep.  Forcing kids to transfer may not
be illegal, but it is dirty and wrong in my book.  It's not fair to the kid.

Wonder if this is a sign that Lance is coming...

Think he was asked to leave?

Is there any doubt?  Malik Stith--another PG--is rumored to be signing and *wham* a scholarship is freed up.

Everyone says Norm runs such a clean ship, but he doesn't care who he has to cut to make room for a kid he thinks is better.  That isn't too clean in my book.

For five years, Norm has been recruiting numerous kids after his scholarship limit is exceeded.  He has no problem telling a kid they're done.

Not that you thought this but Norm got crushed for being loyal to Geno when many thought he wasn't talented enough to be here. Now people are bashing Norm for cutting dead weight to improve. What gives?

Like I've said before this transfer was for the best for both St. John's and Tyshwan.

I don't think anyone wanted Norm to not renew Geno's 'ship.  I think they just wanted him to cut his minutes to around 20 or so.

I just think it is wrong to recruit a kid who has the full intention of playing four years of basketball, studying for four years of school, and making life-long friends.  Norm has 13 transfers in five years and there might be more.

Obviously, some of the transfers were not forced out, but this is ridicolous.  You have to feel for the kid here.

Norm's recruiting is so bad that that he continually takes kids that are gambles at best and the scrambles to replace them.  It's like he is always fighting to save his job.
13?

I have

Edmondson
Cavataio
Wright
Calhoun
Patterson
Torres
Cedric Jackson
Dexter Gray
Rodney Epperson (who didn't qualify)
Derwin Kitchen (who didn't qualify)
Ty Jones (but he was one of the previous regime's guys, did he suit up for Roberts?)

That's 11.

Like my grams say, don't think you seein the forest for the trees brother.

It aint bout Ty necessarily. Its bout a pattern of recruitin non-BE capable playaz and then havin them transfer. Then y'all get another spring signee who aint a BE playa, but you project it as a positive cause no one aint ever seen the kid play and they just go by YouTube highlights.

Transferin on a mass scale bring instability to the program, no doubt. One of the reason we gotta million sophs.

So if Ty transferin was the exception then nobody'd be squawkin. But Ty is the rule and the rule suck.

Parking only for NYCHA permit holders.

I took the number from somebody else.  Off the top of my head I would add Maybank who transferred to Kansas State.  In any event....11, 12, 13, 18...it's ridiculous and unacceptable.  But as long has he doesn't get caught paying players or his team doesn't get caught having sex with a stripper he is Mr. Clean.

Dave
I have followed the team since Mullin's frosh year and this 2 transfer a year thing did not happen under Louie,Mahoney,Fran or Jarvis! Obviously judging by Norm's god awful record he might want to try a different strategy!

Forgot about Maybank.  So that's 12.

Here's the thing, y'all - I know what we have in Norm.  And I think the school would be better served with another coach.  I think most people here know that too - even Dave, who some folks pillory as a pro-Norm pollyanna or something.  That's not the case.  Choz, Marillac, and many others are certainly right, and I've said it too: the instability in the program is ridiculous and a detriment to the team.

It's great that people speak up and complain when this happens.  But it's not a surprise to anyone to see Ty go.  Norm took a risk and it didn't work.  This transfer was for the best, and it's true - a more immediately capable player should have had the schollie from jump.  But I don't see anything to get upset about w/r/t Edmondson - it's not like Justin or DJ or even Dele transferred.  Now, someone should start a thread on "wtf is with this recruiting" and complain there.  Does that make sense?  I'm saying the big picture issue is the recruiting in the first place, and the inability to locate players that can make a difference and want to come (like Omari does), not the revolving door.

It's not about guys who weren't ready to contribute, it's the fact that after these many years, the program's not getting guys who can fit in and fill in.  And from the first mention of Ty (Georgetown College is what, NAIA?), it seemed like he was out of his league.  This transfer was pretty close to a foregone conclusion.

Maybank completed 4 years if I remember & was eligible for a 5th due to medical redshirt- I dont SJU offered 5th year- that's not a transfer.

Dexter & Cedric were Norm scrambling to fill a roster w bodies (in MarchApril when
he was hired) Neither were even rated as BE  bench players, cant fault Norm for these 2.

Subtracting Epperson, Kitchen & TJ as per above & that leaves you w
6 transfers that should not have happened.

Disturbing -definitely, but remember the conditions when he started.

It was never said why, but did Q transfer because he saw burrell coming in & taking most of his minutes ?

BTW, Maybank never suited up for St. John's.  Or suited up one game.  He didn't complete any years at St. John's.

Not defending Norm... But you bring up some legit points. That's why I am going to give him ONLY ONE more year before I fully jump on the Norm Bashing Wagon.

if Q transferred for that reason its a damn shame...he would have been a very good pf/sf and would have gotten a lot of minutes in the past two years and the next...out of all the kids who transferred i was saddest to see him leave, i really liked the kids game

You are mistaken.  Maybank played two years (hurt one).  Played 17 games his second year.

What a foolish post.

First of all, you are completely wrong with Maybank.  He was here for two years and had a fifth year of eligiblity.  He transferred to Kansas State and actually scored 24 in one game.

Secondly, you have to count Kitchen and Epperson as they are officially transfers.  They started school, practiced, and even played in games.

You are really reaching with Dexter, and Ced is a flatout joke.  Beilein was all over the kid and we swept him up because of the open minutes.  He is a projected NBA draft pick, NCAA tournament game winner, conference defensive player of the year, first team all conference, and team captain.

Come back to reality.

Transfers are transfers.  Some kids transfer at every school here and there, but we lead the nation in transfers the last five years under Norm.  Got that, Mr. Excuses?

Maybank came to StJ in Sept 2004  (same reason as Cedric & Dexter above) after 2 yrs Junior college
He sat out the 04/05 season due to injury.
2005/06 he played in 17 games- never starting, averaging 7 min/g
He got his 2 years of StJ scholarship, was eligible for 5th year.
I am pretty sure he graduated w 4 yr degree May 06.
We dont know, but I assume he was not offered extra year.

I didnt mean to insinuate that he played here 4 years

http://statsheet.com/mcb/teams/st-johns/players?season=2005-2006

We all know Kitchen & Epperson were technically transfers.
What were discussing are kids who transferred because of Norm (?)

Epperson & Kitchen transferred because of faulty academics, either before they got here, or after.

Good Luck Ty!  Hope you find somewhere you'll be happy and have a good career.
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

Cedric was offered by WVU & 5 mid majors per scout 04.
Dexter was offered by Iona & Providence.

I'm not trying to make excuses.
I agree all these transfers are very very negative for the program.
Just rehashing some of the reasons the kids left.

Ahh very well said! Yes the big criticism here should be "whats up with this recruiting" not "whats up with these transfers"

Could you imagine if we signed Donald Williams too thank god!

Looked around and you are correct.  That's what grad school will do - didn't watch as many games as I would like, can't depend on memory.

Side note - chill with the name calling, please. (not to me, but to Steve P).  Not necessary.

this is norm being norm.  he's a bigger ho than that woman in pittsburgh.

if you don't think this kid is disappointed big time...then you have no feelings.

if he didn't belong...then norm shouldn't have recruited him.

13 transfers?  give me a break.

it isnt just norm who cuts players scholarships...its every college coach in america...this is the business..Norm got the best player he could have got in his situation and it is partially ty's fault for committing to a school and a conference which was too much for him
