What kind of impact would Lance have on next years team?
« on: April 11, 2009, 12:56:59 PM »
Is he already that much better then DJ or Mason? I don't think they are great but Mason is 4/5 years older. DJ has to be alot stronger. Paris had a good year and he is already 22 years old. Would he be a role player? starter? All Big East? All American? As a freshman for SJU. Is he good enough to play in the NBA this year? Next?

anthony mason jr wishes he was lance.  lance is stronger then dj kennedy.

lance would be a starter, probably average around 16-18 ppg.  he has a chance to be freshman of the year in the big east.  the key would be, when stj goes into an offensive drought or needs to hit a big shot, lance would be the one taking the shot.

i think he should be a 2-3 year player so he can mature as well as develop a more consistent jumper.  he also needs to shed some weight.

It would give us hope for the first time in years.  That is enough right there.

he's very strong and powerful compared to his peers.  but i just don't see him as an athletic freak speed and burst wise.  it seems like he got slower from last year to this year and by becoming more lean/cut/losing weight, would solve that.

someone like lance doesn't have to do that in HS, but in the ncaa i think it would help a lot.  he's even said he has to get into better shape.

Lance has a great combo of physical talent & BB skills. I'm having trouble remembering a frosh coming into the program with that combo. If more unselfish & team oriented he could become an Oscar Robertson like player.

I agree with you. Good assessment.

Lance played against them already and was killing them.

Lance would be the scorer that we need and I think we have a ton of versatility on this team as is and he would only add to that. I think his mere presence just adds to so much needed buzz this program has been aching for. People would come to the games just to see him, we'd add a more city fan base. I must admit I'm very excited for the possibility of this.

Yes, this team needs shotmakers, but they also need players who are a plus on the turnover front.  How is Lance's defense - solid with work?  Opportunistic?

I thought Mason, in the Boston College and LIU games, seemed a little more in control playing defense - like he was trying to stay with his man rather than go for steals and get out of position.  With his length and some experience, maybe he'll be a little better on D than he has been; and if he's not dominating the ball (and I think he's very willing to share), he can be a better player.  And if DJ Kennedy doesn't get the idea to try and take shots all the time - he was good at times, and his aggressiveness was necessary, but he was inconsistent.

But how will Burrell play into this?

Honestly, if they can play defense, stop giving the other teams easy shots, and settle into (complementary) roles, this team could win games.  They'll still be ugly, but... they could make a move in the standings.

It will be pure comedy to watch Lance & Anthony Mason Jr. play together next season.

Two balls hogs who feel the absolute need to control the ball at all times in the half court...

We have talk about this before and if Lance signes it will be spoken about until next season begins..

Where does Norm get the minutes to keep people happy..? Who gets screwed..?   who transfers immediately after Lance signs..?

If St. John's signs Lance its going to have a major impact on multiple levels for the program..   and they will not all be good...

with lance, amjr is the last thing we need...

his D is inconsistent.  he can be very good but he's lazy, always, no matter what game.  unless the opposition pisses him off, it seems he'll just take some ill-advised snipes at the ball and cruise from there.  maybe that'll change in college but habits usually stick.

i'm not sure how good lance would be off the ball.  he's not a lights out shooter, that's the thing.

the team will be interesting if we get lance.  we will have talent, but will norm be capable of coaching them?  will he establish roles?  who won't be happy?  pmg is right.

this team can be either a serious post season team or a complete circus.

Anthony Mason is not a ball hog.  He actually has a low key game, but Norm tells everyone publicly everytime he talks that "Mason has to score."  That's not Mase.

I think those two will play very well together.  In fact, I think the trio of Kennedy-Stephenson-Mason and a big like Evans could be electric on the boards.  If they can work it out with Horne or Roberts on the court, it would be offensive rebound city.

Nobody will benefit more from having Stephenson than Mase.  He'll be able to spot up for three OPEN three's, hit the glass, and catch alley-oops all day.

In theory, with a good coach,I might agree...

But this is St. John's with Norm Roberts...

If the team struggles early next season Mason Jr. will be playing to impress scouts and that is it. He is a 5th year Senior and if you think he is going to defer to any Freshman you are nuts.

Again, I have to disagree.  Norm being able to coach the talent is certainly an issue, but Lance and Mase will be awesome together.  I'm not worried about that at all.

I remember watching the '99 team with all those interchangable guys 6'5-6-7.  I was amazed at how they all attacked the boards and how well they came up with offensive rebounds in spite of their lack of a true big.

We could have three phsyical bullies out there at once with Evans, Kennedy, and Lance.  Those three are beasts.  Surround those beasts with athletic jumping jacks like Q, Paris, and/or Mase and you got a squad that is capable of converting a ton of missed shots into points.

Calling the coach into question is certainly fair and my only concern.  I don't think Mase will having problem deferring anything.  He's just a low key dude.

The scouts want to see him as a shutdown defender and an athletic kid that can throw it down on the break and make perimeter shots. Lance LOVES throwing the alley-oop and would be a benefit to Mase's pro ambitions.

Agreed, Marillac.  Part of AMJR's problem in the offense is that he had to create last year.  This year, he felt he needed to in the games he was in; but he will take a backseat to other shot creators.  Didn't y'all watch him with Hamilton?  He was reluctant.  To his credit, Norm talks about how he needs to aggressively attack the basket, and while you weren't looking, his ratio of 3-point shots to 2-point shots has increased.

To Norm's discredit, Mason still takes off-balance shots and there's no offensive/ passing flow, which would benefit the players greatly.

In truth, the real benefit might be in cutting down shots from both Mase and Kennedy.  Mason is athletic as hell and would be a great finisher and complementary playmaker with the right coaching.  Dj is savvy and aggressive but not that quick...

Really, my concern in the Lance signs scenario is the defense.  The D's fallen off since Norm's first two years (and yes, I know Cedric was there).

My biggest issue with Norm's defense is that his bigs are so damn slow to fill.  Most squads that have good help D struggle with that second adjustment of a wing replacing the big weakside after he leaves to fill the lane.

We RARELY get that far.  Instead, Norm has his guards play far from the basket and when they get beat off the bounce, the whole world knows our bigs won't rotate in time.

It was better when we had Ced and Geno busting their tails on the ball, but we don't have them anymore.

I'd really like to see Kennedy at the four next year.  His quickness alone could mitigate a lot of those situations.  He's also savvy enough and strong enough to hold his own in the post.

One of the most entertaining things all season was watching him and Paul Harris fight for position on two possesions and I have to say DJ won them both and it was intense.

We could probably get away with having DJ and Stephenson running the offense without Boothe on the floor as well.

He, Mason Jr,  is a 2/3 at any level of professional basketball..   he needs to show that he can put the ball on the floor and effectively create his own shot. . which he can't...
