For years, Antonio (Mousey) Carela coached at the famed Rucker summer league, leading Terror Squad to one championship after another.

Slowly, he grew tired of the exercise – not the winning, but the tournament. The atmosphere had begun to dry up. The electricity was gone.

“Nobody,” Carela said, “wanted to go there.”

So Carela left the blacktop, but not for long. Three years ago, he started his own streetball tournament, called Tri State Classic, at nearby Colonel Young Park, at 145th St. and Lennox Ave in Harlem.

Carela, a Bronx native, isn’t coaching anymore; he is an organizer, and has learned on the fly. He has picked up several sponsors, including big names in Nike and McDonald’s.

So far, the tournament is a success.

It attracts high-profile fans and even better basketball. Rapper Fat Joe is a regular. So is New York Knicks forward Al Harrington and newly acquired New Jersey Nets guard Rafer Alston. Ice T has stopped by. Former Rice High stars Kemba Walker, a rising sophomore at Connecticut, and Lamont (Momo) Jones, who recently committed to Arizona, are playing together on Bingo All-Stars, along with Kenny Satterfield, the former Cincinnati standout. St. John’s-bound guard Dwight Hardy is averaging 30.5 points per game for R2K. Kareem Reid, who played briefly in the NBA after a stellar career at Arkansas, recently joined Dancy Power.

“It’s overwhelming,” said Carela, an assistant coach at ASA College in Brooklyn who was a point guard at John F. Kennedy years back. “For a third-year tournament, it’s right up there with everybody else. I get all of the top players.”

Entering the season’s fourth week, there is plenty of depth in the 16-team league. Money Train is 3-0 and Ooh-Way Records, R2K, Bad Boy, Terror Squad are all 2-0.

Carela said he learned a great deal from his days at the Rucker. He won’t make the same mistake he felt others did. Tri State is for the people and that will never change.

“I call it the fan’s tournament,” he said. “If the fans don’t come out, you don’t get no support.”
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

I like the sound of this. Are biggest problem the last few years has been a lack of guys who can score with any consistency.  Hopefully dwight can be a spark off the bench and a guy that can keep teams from packing in zones.

I never been to tri state but I heard that is the top street B-ball in the city
Attack basketball, pressure defense, 40 minutes of hell ... Early on it might be 30 minutes of hell, then 10 minutes of what the hell are you doing?"

If he's really able to score why wouldn't he start?

I know that Norm favors defense, but maybe he'd favor an improved offense over getting fired.

Nah the top one is dyckman. They all play in it. Justin plays with dwight. But I doubt he will be playing in it this year. Corey plays with bingo with ron artest. That is the best tournament all the Dominican women watching wearing nothing and showin everything. Omari Durand and chaz plays on my team.

Does Hofstra have any size?
I remember Adrian Uter did a good job on Lamont Hamilton.

But I didn't see a guy big enough to do any damage last year.

Does anyone know what our big men are doing over the summer?
Hopefully playing in actual games.

It's nice to see Hardy playing against talented players. He's probably playing better teams now than he'll see in November and December.

Thanks bball.

It would be great if someone could suggest to norm that every player plays organized ball over the summer.

It's great that Coker is practicing his jump hooks, but he needs to get comfortable making them in game situation. He couldn't score on anyone last year.

Are their any NCAA rules pertaining to these kids playing organized team ball over the summer?  Not saying that this would ever happen, but what is the ruling on a college team playing together in a summer league?

Kids at other schools seem to play organized ball.
Isn't there a big man camp we could our guys to?
Playing pick up against one another isn't enough.
It hadn't worked so far.

Rutgers played in a tourney. Why can't we?
